Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include student accommodation and two seminar rooms.
    There are 103 standard and large bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and shared laundry room/ kitchenettes.
    Students have a daily Bed and Bistro meal package.
    Becket Court is located to the west side of the Eliot College main building.
    The Reception and Housekeeping for Becket Court are located in Eliot College.

Getting Here (Getting to Becket Court)

  • By Road View
    • The building is in the south east section of the Canterbury Campus, which is approximately 1 mile north of Canterbury City Centre.
      The building can be reached from via the access road off University Road. University Road connects with the A290 Whitstable Road.
    • The nearest car park for Blue Badge holders and university Pink Zone permit holders is Eliot Car Park to the east of the building. This is reached from the turning off University Road.
  • By Bus View
    • There are frequent Unibus services linking the University campus with the centre of Canterbury and Canterbury East and West train stations. The nearest bus stops are on University Road.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest train station is Canterbury West, to the north of the city centre.
      This is on the line from London to Kent, including Ashford International.
      There is step-free access into the station building.
      There is step-free access to both platforms by lift.
      Staff are available to assist with portable ramps between the platform and the train.
      There are buses linking the city centre with the University campus, with stops approximately 5 minutes away from the station.

Building Parking (Becket Court)

    • This entrance isn't primarily for the accomodation however it can be used to access it. It gives direct access to the 2 seminar rooms opposite the entrance and the ground floor of the accomodation.
    • These doors are only open from 8am to 8pm, after which the main entrance must be used. A swipe card is not required at this entrance.
    • This entrance can be bypassed using the main entrance, which opens onto the same corridor.

    • There is level access to most rooms apart from a section on each floor to the rear which has stepped access. Other floors can be reached by lift.

    • The stairs are located by both entrances and each end of the accomodation block corridors.

Although the staircase by the main entrance has the handrail on the right, other flights have them on both sides. The stairs between 1 and 2 are located in the front left hand corner of the building. They only have a handrail on the left hand side going up and no landing.

    • The rooms have desks 73cm high and height adjustable chairs. An example of a room is shown in photographs 1-3.
    • The rooms are all ensuite with stepped showers 18cm high which is shown in photographs 4 and 5.
    • The rooms share kitchenettes which are located off the corridors, with 4 on each floor. They have a counter 93cm high, but limited cooking equipment (fridge, kettle and microwave).
    • Becket Court is catered for accomodation with a £10 daily food voucher. This can be used at Dolche Vita Monday to Friday and for brunch/dinner at Rutherford Dining Hall on weekends and bank holidays.
    • The closest laundrette, apart from the small one on the ground floor of Becket Court, is in Eliot College.
    • Certain accomodation blocks may be suggested for more space if a resident has an assistance dog. Similarly, if a student/resident has a lot of specialist equipment, an ensuite or studio would be suggested (normally the university will pay the difference in cost).
    • Any additional aids for sensory or mobility impairments (vibrating pillows, light alerts, mobile hoists) are the student’s home local authority’s responsibility. However, they can be provided on request in the interim if any issues arise.
