Introduction

  • Comments View
    • This building is laid out as a cross shape in plan, known as North, South, East and West wings.
    • There is an open courtyard at the centre where the wings meet.
    • Student and staff facilities are mainly on levels 2, 3 and 4 of the building.
    • There are a small number of rooms on levels 1 and 5, but not complete floors at these levels.
    • The main entrance from the centre of the campus enters the west wing on level 3. .
    • From the atrium after this entrance, there are entrances into the north and south wings which then link through to the east wing.
    • There is also an entrance directly into the west wing on level 2 of the building, from the loading bay area opposite Becket Court to the west side of the building.

Getting Here

  • By Road View
    • The building is in the south east section of the Canterbury Campus, which is approximately 1 mile north of Canterbury City Centre.
      The building can be reached from the pedestrianised central campus area or from the access road off University Road, known as Eliot Road on some maps.
    • The nearest car park for Blue Badge holders and university Pink zone permit holders is Eliot Car Park to the west of the building.
      This is reached from the turning off University Road.
      University Road connects with the A290 Whitstable Road.
  • By Bus View
    • There are frequent Unibus services linking the University campus with the centre of Canterbury and Canterbury East and West train stations.
      The nearest bus stops are on Giles Lane or Darwin Road.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest train station is Canterbury West, to the north of the city centre.
      This is on the line from London to Kent, including Ashford International.
      There is step-free access into the station building.
      There is step-free access to both platforms by lift.
      Staff are available to assist with portable ramps between the platform and the train.
      There are buses linking the city centre with the University campus, with stops approximately 5 minutes away from the station.

    • From the entrance into the hall, there 6 steps down to hall level (photograph 5).

Getting Around

  • Access View
    • There is step free access throughout the majority of the building, via lift.

      They can by bypassed using the lift in the west wing and approaching the hall following the corridor around the building through the north and east wings.
    • There is/are 6 clearly marked step(s), with no handrails, for access to Eliot dining hall from south wing level 2.
    • The step(s) is/are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
    • There is a platform lift which overcomes the steps.
    • These steps are shown in photographs 3 and 4.
    • There are doors in corridors which have to be opened manually.
  • Getting Around View
    • There is clear signage for building facilities/areas in the foyer/reception area.
    • There is clearly written directional signage at key points of circulation routes.
    • There is some flooring in corridors which is shiny and could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
    • There is good colour contrast between the walls and floor in all areas.
    • The lighting levels are good.
    • This building does not play background music.
    • There is a hearing assistance system.
    • The system is a fixed loop.
    • There is a hearing loop in the lecture theatre and many of the seminar rooms.

  • Comments View
    • Eliot College is a large and complex building to navigate.
    • Some rooms may be a considerable distance from the main lift.
    • Maps showing the main routes on each floor are available from College Reception and at key points throughout the building. (see photographs 5,6,7 and 8).
    • It is not always clear where one wing ends and another begins.
    • Generally, room signage indicates the wing, so the prefix ES3 means Eliot south wing level 3.
    • Further letters may indicate the type of room or the location within the wing.
    • Photographs 9 and 10 show some of the main corridors.
    • Many of the staff offices are off narrow corridors, accessed by doors with a 69cm clear opening.
    • Photograph 11 shows the student laundry room on level 2.
    • There are computer rooms and study hub areas on east wing level 4 (seen in 12 - 14).

Other Floors (Stair X - Eliot College Chapel Stairs)

  • Steps View
    • The floors which are accessible by stairs are 2, 3 and 4.
    • The stairs are located to the left after the west wing entrance.
    • The stairs are approximately 10m from the west wing entrance.
    • There are 15+ steps between floors.
    • The lighting levels are bright.
    • The steps are clearly marked.
    • The steps are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
    • The steps do have handrails.
    • The steps have a handrail on both sides.
    • There is a landing.
    • Stair X is shown in photographs 1 - 3. There are many similar stairs throughout the building, in all wings. Some stairs, such as stair XII in the west wing, do have manual heavy double doors on level 3. Photograph 4 shows one of the additional sets of stairs which are not numbered.

    • There are some areas of level 2 which are not accessible by the lift.
    • Stair XII continues up from level 4 to the Kennedy Room on level 5.
    • South wing stair III continues up to Lyons Room on level 5.

    • This entrance gives access to a covered cloister area with entrances to either side to seminar rooms Holland and Bird.
    • There is also level access into the central garden, where there are some gravel paths and grassed areas.
    • There is a similar entrance to the courtyard from the north wing.
    • Seminar rooms Taylor and Chilvert are off the cloister on the opposite side of the courtyard and can only be reached through the garden.
    • The ramp to enter the cloister to access these rooms is very steep (photographs 4 and 5).

  • Comments View
    • The room surveyed was standard room W2W1 (west wing, level 2, room 1), shown in photographs 1 - 4.
    • This group of rooms is accessed by the stairs off the atrium just after the college main entrance.
    • These rooms cannot be reached by lift, but there are other standard rooms on all levels which do have level access by lift.
    • Each group of rooms opens off a shared corridor, where there is a toilet and showers.
    • There is also a small kitchenette for drinks and snacks.
    • Meals are taken in Mungo's restaurant or other food outlets across the campus.

Lecture Theatre(s) (Eliot Lecture Theatre 2 (ELT 2))
