Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include blocks of flats and shared houses (A, B, C, D, E, ,F ,G, H, J).
  • Turing College is a large development of student accommodation, comprising of flats and shared houses and associated facilities.
    At its centre is The Hub containing the reception, dining, social spaces, launderette and other facilities.
    There is alternative access from Giles Lane via Keynes College.
    Vehicle access is from Giles Lane or the new access road off University Road.

Getting Here (Getting to Turing College)

  • By Road View
    • The building is in the south-west section of the Canterbury Campus, which is approximately 1 mile north of Canterbury City Centre.
      The building can be reached via Turing Road which leads off University Road.
      University Road connects with the A290 Whitstable Road.
      There is pedestrianised access from Giles Lane and Rothford Car Park.
    • The nearest campus car park for Blue Badge holders and university Pink zone permit holders are Keynes or Rothford Car parks to the north and east of Turing College.
      They can be reached by from Giles Lane or University Road.
  • By Bus View
    • There are frequent Unibus services linking the University campus with the centre of Canterbury and Canterbury East and West train stations.
      The nearest bus stops are on University Road.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest train station is Canterbury West, to the north of the city centre.
      This is on the line from London to Kent, including Ashford International.
      There is step-free access into the station building.
      There is step-free access to both platforms by lift.
      Staff are available to assist with portable ramps between the platform and the train.
      There are buses linking the city centre with the University campus, with stops approximately 5 minutes away from the station.

Building Parking (Blue Badge parking - C, D, F Blocks)

    • Photographs 5 and 6 show the other bays available. Most of those closest to the Hub are for loading/deliveries only.

    • Flat B1/G (photographs 1-4): An accessible room with an ensuite shower and sink with 2 drop-down rails on either side of both. There are 2 emergency alarms in the bathroom.
    • The push-pads into the adapted kitchen are 90cm high. There is an adjustable counter with a sink and hob. The standard counter is 91cm high. There are low cupboards, sofas, coffee table and a dining table 74cm high.
    • Flat B2/G (photographs 5-9): Another large room (530x560cm) with an adjoining room onto a standard room B2/F for carers if need be. There are automatic doors into the room and kitchen, which has a similar adapted setup. The bathroom does not have any adaptions eg drop-down rails etc but does have a wheel-in shower.
    • B9/B and B10/A (photographs 10-11): Similar to B2/G in terms of rooms size but no adaptations in the bathroom or automatic doors. B9/B and B10/A both adjoin onto a standard room. They do not have an adapted kitchen.
    • E1/G, E2/G, E10/A (photographs 12-14): E1/G is the only one of the 3 which has a profiling bed. However they all have automated doors to the adapted kitchen (similar to B1/G and B2/G). The room has power assisted windows with controls 105cm high and an adjoining room. The bathrooms have large wheel-in showers and emergency alarms but no drop-down rails or other adaptations. E10/A is similar to B10/A but there is no adjoining room.
    • A Block (photographs 15-18): standard rooms with ensuite (26cm stepped showers), shared kitchens with counters 92cm high, 72cm high dining table, sofas and bench. It has all standard amenities.
    • C and D Houses (photograph 19-22): standard rooms. The ground floor has an ensuite with a 3cm step into the bathroom and a 22cm stepped shower. The rooms have a desk 74cm high and chair. The other rooms share bathrooms with stepped showers which are similar to the ensuite.
    • F and G Blocks (photographs 23 and 24): standard rooms with similar stepped showers.
    • H Block: 6 houses, with 12 beds in each. 2 rooms share 1 bathroom with similar stepped showers. They share a standard kitchen on the ground floor.
    • J Block: 10 houses with 12 beds in each. 2 rooms share 1 bathroom, with similar stepped showers. They share a standard kitchen on the ground floor.
    • Auxiliary Aids: Certain accomodation blocks may be suggested for more space if a resident has an assistance dog. Similarly, if a student/resident has a lot of specialist equipment, an ensuite or studio would be suggested (normally the university will pay the difference in cost).
    • Any additional aids for sensory or mobility impairments (vibrating pillows, light alerts, mobile hoists) are the student’s home local authority’s responsibility. However, they can be provided on request in the interim if any issues arise.
