Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include ensuite standard and adapted self-catered accommodation available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
    There are 5-8 students per flat.
    The accessible room is on the bottom floor of C Block and also F Block (1 in each).
  • Services / facilities within the grounds include other accomodation blocks, Woolf College Halls Pavilion with reception for parcels/post and laundry room and Woolf College lecture theatres and teaching spaces.

Getting Here (Getting to Woolf College Block C)

  • By Road View
    • The building is on the north-east side of the campus located off Giles Lane. Giles Lane is reached via the A290 Whitstable Road.
      This is just over a 1 mile north of Canterbury City Centre.
    • The building has its own dedicated parking for Blue Badge holders but there are other car parks nearby.
      The Giles Lane car park is for Blue Badge holders and university Pink permit holders only.
      There are 2 Blue Badge bays close to Woolf Blocks and Pavilion.
      The nearest car park for other users/ visitors is the Central Visitor Car Park, to the west of the Gulbenkian/Colyer-Fergusson Buildings.
      This is reached using Library Road off Giles Lane and then taking the footpath around Colyer-Fergusson to the central campus area.
  • By Bus View
    • There are frequent Unibus services linking the University campus with the centre of Canterbury and Canterbury East and West train stations.
      The nearest bus stop is on Giles Lane.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest train station is Canterbury West, to the north of the city centre.
      This is on the line from London to Kent, including Ashford International.
      There is step-free access into the station building.
      There is step-free access to both platforms by lift.
      Staff are available to assist with portable ramps between the platform and the train.
      There are buses linking the city centre with the University campus, with stops about 5 minutes away from the station.

    • The car park has 2 sections - both of which are for Blue badge or pink permit holders only from 8am Monday to 5pm Friday.
    • The section closest to Woolf College does not have any security barriers to pass through and has the 2 Blue Badge bays. There is a path with a slope by the bays towards the blocks and pavilion. This is shown in photographs 1-3.
    • The other larger section shown in photographs 4-8 has security barriers to enter with an intercom 115cm high. The route out of the car park is slightly sloped.

    • There is a very slight slope on the path leading to Block C. All Woolf Blocks have similar entrance, however others (apart from F Block) do not have automatic doors.

    • The bathroom has an emergency alarm, 2 drop-down rails and vertical/horizontal rails for the shower. The toilet has a backrest instead of a cistern.
    • There is a shared kitchen with a counter 91cm high. There is a height adjustable section with a sink and hob as well as low cupboards. There is a breakfast bar that is 93cm high with a 90cm recess.
    • The other accessible room has a ceiling track hoist covering the bed and transfer space next to it. The room has push-pad automatic doors at the entrance to the room and the ensuite, electrically height adjustable bed and electrically operated blinds. It has a Closomat wash-dry facility in the ensuite.
    • Auxiliary Aids: Certain accomodation blocks may be suggested for more space if a resident has an assistance dog. Similarly, if a student/resident has a lot of specialist equipment, an ensuite or studio would be suggested (normally the university will pay the difference in cost). Adaptations are made to accessible rooms to meet the need of each resident.
    • There is also an accessible room in F Block and an accessible studio flat in J Block. Both of these rooms contain wheel in showers.
    • Any additional aids for sensory or mobility impairments (vibrating pillows, light alerts, mobile hoists) are the student’s home local authority’s responsibility. However, they can be provided on request in the interim if any issues arise.
