Introduction

Getting Here (Getting to Tyler Court C)

  • By Road View
    • The building is on the south-east side of the campus to the rear of Rutherford Annex.
      This is about 1 mile north of Canterbury City Centre.
      The building can be reached via Darwin Road which leads off Giles Lane.
      Giles Lane connects with the A290 Whitstable Road.
    • The Rutherford and Darwin campus car parks are for Blue Badge holders and university Pink permit holders only.
      The nearest car park for other users is the Central Visitor Car Park, to the west of the Gulbenkian/Colyer-Fergusson Buildings.
      This is reached using Library Road which leads off Giles Lane.
  • By Bus View
    • There are frequent Unibus services linking the University campus with the centre of Canterbury and Canterbury East and West train stations.
      The nearest bus stops are on Darwin Road.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest train station is Canterbury West, to the north of the city centre.
      This is on the line from London to Kent, including Ashford International.
      There is step-free access into the station building.
      There is step-free access to both platforms by lift.
      Staff are available to assist with portable ramps between the platform and the train.
      There are buses linking the city centre with the University campus, with stops about 5 minutes away from the station.

Building Parking

There are two spherical bollard with gaps of 115cm or 140cm gaps on either side. The first 2.5 metres of the approach to the door has a steep slope with a gradual/slight slope up to the door after that.

    • Bathroom features: horizontally adjustable sink with a drop-down rail on the right; a toilet with drop-down rails on both sides and a remote control to raise and lower it; an emergency alarm by the shower; shower controls which are horizontally adjustable and a seat which is horizontally and vertically adjustable and a horizontal rail on the inside of the bathroom door.
    • Adapted kitchen features (photographs 8-11): The automatic doors have push-pads 95cm high and are 76cm wide; a counter 90cm high and a lower section 76cm with a 73cm knee recess; an adjustable counter with a sink and hob and low cupboards.
    • The standard rooms (example shown C- 8G in photographs 12-17) have stepped bathrooms/showers around 12cm high and a sink 83cm high. The rooms have beds, desks 75cm high and height adjustable chairs. They share similar kitchens without the adaptations.
    • Auxiliary Aids: Certain accomodation blocks may be suggested for more space if a resident has an assistance dog. Similarly, if a student/resident has a lot of specialist equipment, an ensuite or studio would be suggested (normally the university will pay the difference in cost).
    • Any additional aids for sensory or mobility impairments (vibrating pillows, light alerts, mobile hoists) are the student’s home local authority’s responsibility. However, they can be provided on request in the interim if any issues arise.
