Introduction

  • This is a Route Plan From Northampton Station to the Senate.

Leaving the Train Station

  • Leave the train station through the rear accessible exit and turn right along the paved pathway along the side of the building.
  • Then turn right at the end of the building and up the steep paved path. (photographs 4, 5 and 6).
  • At the top of the path there are metal bollards which narrow to 117cm wide, pass these on the left (photograph 6).
  • You then join Black Lion Hill.
  • This journey is about 64 metres long.

Black Lion Hill Towards Mare Fair

  • Bare left along Black Lion Hill paved path, there is a steep incline along this road.
  • Pass the bus stop on the left and keep going to the pedestrian crossing (photograph 4 and 5).
  • The pedestrian crossing has tactile paving and has a slight slope down on the dropped kerb to the road (photograph 5, 6, 7 and 8).
  • The controls for the traffic light at the pedestrian crossing are 107cm from the floor. There is no sound to the crossing.
  • Cross St Andrews Road to the other side where there is tactile paving with a short slight slope upwards to the dropped kerb to join Mare Fair.
  • This journey is about 100 metres long.

Mare Fair to Gold Street

  • Carry along the paved path on Mare Fair, there is an incline to the road.
  • Cross the side road entrance which has low dropped kerbs and tactile paving (photograph 2 and 3).
  • Keep straight ahead along the paved path where there are temporary boarding on your left. This narrows to the path to 114cm (photograph 5).
  • Keep going straight along the paved pathway, pass Sol Central and the Ibis Hotel on the left and the bus shelter on your right (photographs 8 and 9).
  • The road slopes downwards towards the pedestrian crossing (photographs 10 and 11).
  • The controls for the traffic light at the pedestrian crossing are 100cm from the floor with no sound (photograph 12).
  • There is tactile paving slightly slopes down to the road on the dropped kerb.
  • Cross the tarmac road the tactile paving which has a slight slope upwards on the dropped kerb to join Gold Street.
  • This journey is about 260 metres long.

Gold Street to George Row

  • Carry up the steep paved path along Gold Street.
  • There is a slight slope to the road way on the footpath.
  • Cross College Street where there is a slight slope on the dropped kerb with tactile paving to the road (photograph 5).
  • There is a slight slope up to the dropped kerb with tactile paving on the other side of the road (photographs 6 and 7).
  • Carry up until there is drop kerb on the right with tactile paving to the dropped kerb to cross Gold Street, cross the road (photographs 9, 10 and 11).
  • Bare left and then right towards the dropped kerb crossing with no tactile to the dropped kerb and cross Bridge Street (photograph 13).
  • Cross Bridge Street where there is a level island in the middle of the road.
  • On the other side of the road there is a dropped kerb with block paving and no tactile paving (photograph 14).
  • This journey is about 245 metres long.

George Row, St Giles's Square to Guildhall Road

  • On George Row the paving starts as block paving then to concrete paving slabs with some slabs which have been replaced by tarmac (photographs 1 and 2).
  • There is a slight incline form the Bridge Street to George Row.
  • Carry straight along the pavement.
  • The pavement narrows to 140cm by the lamppost on the left (photograph 7).
  • Keep straight pass the public house on the right and then at the end of the road turn right down Guildhall Road.
  • This journey is about 188 metres long.

Guildhall Road to join St John's Street

  • Carry down Guildhall Road which slopes down the hill. The paving at the top of the hill is uneven concrete slabs.
  • There is tactile paving and a dropped kerb to cross an entrance road which is tarmac and block paved on the right (photographs 3, 4 and 5).
  • Cross this and carry on down the hill where the concrete slabs are level.
  • Before you reach Angel Street cross Guildhall Road to the other side where there are dropped kerbs, when you reach the other side turn right and continue down the hill (photographs 9 and 10).
  • The pavement narrows due to a lamppost and a bin to 135cm. Pass through these to cross the Angel Street with drop kerbs, (photographs 11, 12, 13 and 14).
  • The paving becomes blocked paved and then concrete slabs.
  • Carry down the path.
  • The path narrows to 140cm due to a signpost which is on the left. (photograph 17).
  • The pavement changes to block pavements with short steep slope down and up for the entrance to the car park to the left (photograph 18).
  • Continue on. The path narrows to 140cm due to a signpost which is on the right (photograph 19).
  • The pavement changes to block pavements with a short steep slope down and up for the entrance to the car park to the left (photographs 20 and 21)
  • The path narrows to 140cm due to a signpost which is on the left.
  • There are temporary posts on the paving where it narrows to 100cm (photograph 22).
  • Bare left to the tarmac path to cross St John's Street with dropped kerbs.
  • This journey is about 237 metres long.

St Johns House to Swan Street

  • From exiting the St Johns House Car Park Area turn right and continue along St Johns Street for approximately 100m until you reach Swan Street.
  • As you do so you will pass St Johns Halls of Residence.
  • The surface of the pavement is a mixture of uneven tarmac and uneven brick block paving.
  • There is a slight gradient heading down towards the road.
  • There are dropped kerbs along the pavement after approximately 50m.
  • Next to the dropped kerb is a lamppost on the pavement which limits its width to 136cm.
  • There is a slight slope as you approach Swan Street.

Swan Street to Victoria Promenade

  • Upon reaching Swan Street turn right and head along the pavement until you reach Victoria Promenade after approximately 90m.
  • There is a steep downward slope as you proceed along the pavement.
  • The surface of the pavement is brick block paving.
  • At the end of Swan Street use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road.
  • There are tactile drop kerbs either side of the road and as the paving on the central island.
  • The crossing is shown in photographs 6, 7 and 8.

Victoria Promenade to Beckets Park

  • Continue along the pavement for approximately 20m continue along Victoria Promenade before crossing at the first pedestrian crossing (photograph 1)
  • The crossing has tactile drop kerbs on either side of the road and either side of a central drop kerb.
  • The controls for the traffic light at the pedestrian crossing are 106cm from the floor.
  • The crossing is shown in photographs 2, 3 and 4.
  • Turn left on reaching the other side of Victoria Promenade and continue for 30m until you reach the entrance to Beckets Park.

Beckets Park to Waterside Campus

  • Head forward through and Beckets Park and across Beckets Bridge into Waterside Campus approximately 300m.
  • On heading into Beckets Park there is a small uneven cobbled section of paving (photograph 2).
  • Continue along the path for approximately 115m until you reach Beckets Bridge which will take you over the River Nene.
  • There are bollards to access the bridge with a width of 110cm between them (photograph 4).
  • There is a steep slope up the bridge as shown in photographs 5 and 6.
  • There is a wooden surface along the bridge.
  • On the far side of the bridge there is a slight slope heading down (photograph 7 and 8).
  • There are bollards on exiting the bridge with a width of 110cm (photograph 9).

Waterside Campus Riverside to Senate

  • Head through the campus from the riverside to Senate a distance of approximately 350m.
  • Upon exiting Beckets Bridge continue forward for approximately 100m heading past the Creative Hub (photographs 1, 2 and 3).
  • The surface here is mostly level and consists of brick block paving.
  • After approximately 100m turn right and head along the path located between the Learning Hub and the Visitor's Centre (photograph 4).
  • Approximately 20m after turning right there is a slight slope heading downwards (photograph 5).
  • After which continue along the path for approximately 100m until you are past the Learning Hub (photograph 6).
  • After passing the Learning Hub turn left past the Market and head along the path for approximately 130m until you reach the rear entrance to Senate (photographs 7, 8 and 9).

Outside Access (Rear Entrance)

  • Entrance View
    • This information is for the entrance located at the rear of the building.
    • There is ramped/sloped access at this entrance.
    • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
    • The main door(s) open(s) automatically.
    • The door(s) is / are single.
    • The width of the door opening is 148cm (4ft 10in).
  • Second Set of Doors View
    • There is a second set of doors.
    • The door(s) open(s) automatically (towards you).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The width of the door opening is 196cm (6ft 5in).
  • Ramp/Slope View
    • There is a ramp/slope at this entrance.
    • The ramp/slope is located in front of the entrance.
    • The ramp/slope gradient is slight.
  • Comments View
    • There are a further set of doors beyond the second set of doors as seen in photographs 3 & 4.
    • The right set of doors are automatic double doors which open towards you at 195cm wide as seen in photographs 4.
    • The doors to the left are manual and pull to open, with one door locked at 99cm wide.
