Trent Building to Opposite Portland Building Main Entrance

  • At the east entrance of the Trent Building turn right onto the pavement.

  • Continue past the bike store/electric scooters where there is more bench seating after 15m.
  • The bench seating has no armrests.
  • Carry on past the seating down the walkway with a slight slope for 36m.
  • There are bollards in the road to the left.
  • After a further 5m there is signage for East Drive to the right.
  • Opposite, to the left, is the junction for Portland Hill - East Drive.
  • Continue for 20m down a slight slope with some uneven surfaces due to wear of the tarmac.
  • There is more bench seating opposite the UN40 bus stop.
  • The seating has no armrests.
  • Continue for 17m down the uneven tarmac walkway with a slight slope.
  • There is more bench seating with no armrests.
  • Continue for 20m until you reach the East Drive/Keighton Hill Crossroads.
  • Before this crossroads there is a colour change in the tarmac from black to red.
  • There is also a slight camber in the road from right to left.

East Drive/Keighton Hill Crossroads to Science Road

  • Continue over the East Drive/Keighton Hill Crossroads down the slight slope for 12m.
  • The walkway width is 172cm is made of tarmac and uneven in places due to covered cables.
  • After 12m there is a dropped curb with blister tactile paving.
  • This crossing is used to access the Life Science Car Park and Building.
  • The walkway cambers slightly from right to left at this road crossing.
  • Continue past this crossing and for 25m, past the Life Sciences building.
  • The road starts to bear right.
  • Follow the road to the right for 10m.
  • There is a zebra crossing without Belisha Beacons to the left.
  • The crossing is used to access the Psychology Building.
  • Turn left to face the crossing.
  • The crossing reads 'STOP LOOK BOTH WAYS'.
  • There is a dropped curb with blister paving at this crossing.
  • The crossing cambers slightly to the left.
  • Continue for 6m across East Drive before reaching more blister tactile paving with a dropped kerb on the opposite side of the road.
  • As you reach this side of the road the paving changes from tarmac to a cobbled surface and narrows to 165cm.
  • Turn right and continue for 4m down a slight slope.
  • There is a slight left and the walkway widens.
  • There is a slight camber from left to right.
  • After a further 2m the block paving patterns changes slightly.
  • Continue for 8m across the uneven surface caused by manhole covers, drains and electrical covers.
  • The block paving pattern changes again just before a left hand bend in the walkway.
  • Continue to follow the bend in the walkway for 3m and the signage for Science Road can be seen from across the road.

Science Road to The Wolfson Building

  • Turn left onto Science Road.
  • Continue for 2m until you reach the point where the locked paving changes to tarmac.
  • There is a dropped kerb with a steep slope and blister tactile paving cutting across the walkway.
  • The crossing causes a slight left to right camber.
  • Continue past the crossing for 1m where the tarmac changes colour slightly.
  • The walkway narrows at this point to 144cm for 8m.
  • After 8m St. Peter's Bus Stop is to the left.
  • The walkway narrows here to 115cm.
  • After the bus stop the walkway widens again.
  • Continue for 9m along the uneven surfaces caused by slightly raised manhole covers and worn tarmac.
  • After 2m there is a dropped kerb with blister tactile paving.
  • The crossing is used to access the other side of the road.
  • The crossing causes a steep slope on either side of the tactile blister paving.
  • Continue past the crossing for 6m where the walkway turns slightly left.
  • Follow the walkway round to the left for 2m until there is a dropped kerb with blister tactile paving.
  • This crossing is used to cross over the roads that services the L4 building.
  • Turn right to face the crossing and continue for 6m over the service road.
  • On the other side of the road there is a dropped kerb with blister tactile paving.
  • There is a steep slope due to the dropped kerb and water can collect here.
  • Continue round a slight left hand bend for 3m.
  • The walkway is tarmac and even with a width of 134cm.
  • Continue for 12m before coming to a lamppost that cuts into the walkway.
  • This lamppost causes the walkway to narrow to 76cm.
  • After the obstruction the walkway widens to 134cm.
  • Continue for 13m before reaching a slight left hand turn in the walkway.
  • Follow the walkway to the left where there is tactile blister paving across the path.
  • This crossing is used to cross the Institute of Hearing Research service road.
  • Continue for 6m across the service road.
  • There are manhole covers across this part of the road and the road cambers slightly to the left.
  • Across the road there is blister tactile paving with a slight slope upwards.
  • The walkway bends slightly to the left.
  • Continue down the tarmac walkway for 20m before reaching the signage for the Wolfson Building.

The Wolfson Building to the rear of the Biodiscovery Institute

  • Continue for 5m past the Wolfson Building entrance along the tarmac walkway.
  • The walkway has a width of 134cm and is even.
  • After 5m the walkway bears to the left there is a zebra crossing with tactile blister paving that crosses the walkway.
  • The zebra crossing is used to cross the road servicing the Biodiscovery Institute.
  • Follow the walkway around to the left and continue past the blister tactile paving for 3m.
  • The walkway cambers to the right slightly due to a dropped kerb but also widens to 150cm+.
  • Continue for 12m until you reach a bike store to the left and a zebra crossing to the right.
  • The zebra crossing has no Belisha beacons.
  • Turn right to face the crossing, the crossing has a dropped kerb but no tactile paving.
  • Continue for 4m across the crossing with a slight camber to the left.
  • On the other side of the road there is a dropped kerb with no tactile paving.
  • The tarmac colour changes from black to red.
  • Turn left and continue for 10m where there is a manhole cover on this route that may cause a trip hazard.
  • Continue for 10m and the red tarmac changes to a white block paved path.
  • Continue for 4m before reaching the road the services the Boots Science Building and the rear of the Biodiscovery Institute.

The rear of the Biodiscovery Institute to Coates Atrium

  • Cross over the road that services the Boots Science Building.
  • There are dropped kerbs on both sides but no actual crossing guidance.
  • Continue across the road for 3m.
  • The walkway changes from white block paving to red tarmac and narrows to 140cm.
  • On the other side of the road there is a dropped kerb.
  • Turn left where there is a lamppost that narrows the walkway to 80cm.
  • Turn right and the walkway widen to 132cm.
  • Continue for 18m where a manhole cover along the walkway may cause a trip hazard there is also a bike store to the right.
  • Continue for 3m where the walkway narrows to 128cm due to metal barriers.
  • Continue for 8m where there is tactile paving that signals a car park to the right.
  • Continue past the paving and the car park for 12m.
  • The walkway widens with bollards to the left.
  • The bollards contrast with the paving and have visual indicators at the top.
  • Continue for 4m and the entrance for the Coates Atrium will be to the left and the signage to the right.

Coates Atrium to Coates Building Second Entrance

  • Continue past the Coates Atrium signage for 3m to reach a zebra crossing with no Belisha Beacons.
  • There is tactile blister paving before the crossing with some uneven surfaces.
  • The crossing is used to cross Coates Road.
  • Continue over the crossing for 3m.
  • This side of the crossing has tactile blister paving with a dropped kerb.
  • Turn left where the walkway narrows to 85cm.
  • The walkway surface is blocked paving.
  • Continue for 15m where there is a bridge overhead, the L2 building to the left and the Coates Building third entrance to the right.
  • Continue for 14m there is blister tactile paving and a crossing.
  • The crossing is used to cross Coates Road.
  • Continue past the crossing for 7m where the paving turns from block paving to tarmac.
  • Continue for 3m where there is tactile blister paving signalling the steps at the second entrance to the Coates Building and a zebra crossing to the left.
  • There are bollards with a width of 187cm.
  • The bollards contrast visually with the floor and have a visual indication band at the top.

Coates Building Second Entrance to Coates Building First Entrance

  • Continue past the Coates Building second entrance and the zebra crossing.
  • The walkway is tarmac and 150cm+ width.
  • There are some drains and manhole covers that may cause a trip hazard along this route.
  • Continue down a slight slope for 34m past the L3 building on the left.
  • To the right will be the first entrance to Coates Building and to the left (across the road) will be the entrance to the L4 building.

Coates Building First Entrance to Life Sciences Building

  • Continue under the bridge and past the L4 building (across the road) on the left.
  • After 6m the pathway narrows to 145cm due to construction barriers.
  • Continue up a slight slope for 4m where the tarmac become slightly uneven with some colour changes.
  • After 2m the tarmac then changes to blocked paving and there is a dropped kerb.
  • Turn left and continue up a slight slope with a camber to the right.
  • The walkway has some uneven surfaces due to loose cobbles and manhole covers.
  • After 12m the walkway bears to the left.
  • After 2m follow the path to the right.
  • Continue for 4m and turn left.
  • Continue up a sight slope for 14m and bear right.
  • The Life Sciences building car park will be on the left.
  • Turn left to face the car park, there is a dropped kerb with drainage grids running parallel to the kerb.
  • The block paving changes to tarmac.
  • Continue for 8m to face the drop off point in the car park.
  • Turn left and continue for 4m where there is a dropped kerb with blister tactile paving.
  • The tarmac changes to block paving and the pathway narrows to 150cm+.
  • Continue for 6m to reach the entrance for the Life Sciences building.

Outside Access (North Entrance)

  • Continue for 4m to reach the crossing for the rear car park of the Life Sciences Building.
