Overview

Getting Inside

  • There are numerous step-free approaches to the Library from other areas of campus.
    • The approach to the building from the Mary Seacole Health Innovation Centre and the Fincham Building is step-free and level.
    • The approach from the Elm Grove building is on a slope with a very easy incline.
    • The approach from Elm Grove Hall, the Sir David Bell Building, Mandela House, Shaw House and from the direction of the Southlands campus is on a long slope with a slight gradient.
  • There are 2 entrances into the Library which provide access to the ground floor.
    • The most accessible entrance is opposite the Elm Grove building and is signed 'Library'.
    • There is an alternative entrance opposite the Mary Seacole Health Innovation Centre, which is not named or signed.
  • There are key card activated automatic doors and manual revolving doors at both entrances.
  • Both entrances provide step-free level access to the ground floor reception area, including the nest counter.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
  • There is moveable shelving on the second floor which allows opening widths to be adjusted.
  • The Silent Study space on the third floor requires a key card for access.
  • There is a staff office on the third floor, The Weston Room, which requires a key card for access.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a patterned finish.
  • There are plentiful resting areas on all floors with a mixture of seating.
  • Lecture chairs with armrests on both sides are available in teaching rooms, and on request from staff.
  • Wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided near the lift lobbies.
  • There are manual doors into some areas such as study, researchers' and staff rooms from the first floor upwards.
  • There is automatic lighting along shelving from the first floor upwards.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 9 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on the ground, first, second, and third floors off the South and North lift lobbies, and off the North lift lobby on the lower ground floor for the Walsingham Garden Room and Café.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • All of the toilets with adaptations on the South side of the building, nearest the accessible entrance, have a transfer space on the left-hand side.
    • All of the toilets with adaptations on the North side of the building, furthest from the accessible entrance, including for the Walsingham Garden Room and Café, have a transfer space on the right-hand side.
    • The shared step-free standard toilet facilities are located off the South and North lift lobbies on the ground, first and second floors, and off the North lift lobby on the lower ground floor for the Walsingham Garden Room and Café.
    • There are no standard toilets on the third floor.

Entrance (Accessible Entrance)

  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via a very easy slope at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 92cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 107cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.
  • There is a key card reader to exit at a height of 94cm.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Counter (nest)

  • The counter is located on the left after the accessible entrance.
  • The distance from the accessible entrance is 10m.
  • The distance from the accessible entrance left-hand doorway is 3m.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 110cm.
  • There is not a lowered section at the counter.
  • The counter has windows and patterned/distracting backgrounds.
  • There is a portable hearing assistance system on request.
  • There is background noise in this area which varies depending on the time of day.

Reception

Lift (South Lift)

  • The lift surveyed is located on the left after the security barriers.
  • The distance from the security barriers is 9m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and doors permanently held open.
  • The ground, first, second and third floors are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 1000kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 100cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 160cm (width) x 136cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a high visual contrast.
  • Some of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • Internally the lift has: a mirror to aid reversing, a hearing assistance alarm system, a visual floor indicator and an audible announcer.
