Introduction

  • This is a route from the University Elm Grove Conference Centre to Mount Clare campus. This route is via Roehampton Lane, Clarence Lane and Danebury Avenue.
  • This route is approximately 1.4km long and takes around 20 minutes to complete. The main hazards on this route are steep slopes, congested pavements and uncontrolled road crossings.

Elm Grove Conference Centre to the Digby Stuart College Pedestrian Entrance

  • Exit Elm Grove Conference Centre and turn right towards the main gates.
  • This area has an even and level, stone block surface.
  • Head straight past the end of the building and cross the shared space road.
  • There are low level bollards at this crossing marking each side of the shared space road which are approximately 230cm apart.
  • This crossing is level with no tactile paving (photographs 2 to 4).
  • Bear left around the guard post building and continue onto Roehampton Lane (photograph 5).
  • The main gate is 160cm wide and permanently held open (photograph 6).
  • Continue onto Roehampton Lane and follow the pavement around to the right (photographs 7 to 9).
  • The pavement has an even and level concrete block surface.
  • There is a line of tactile paving after approximately 5m, marking the crossing across the University Entrance (photograph 7).
  • Once around the corner the gradient increases to a slight uphill gradient (photographs 9 and 10).
  • After approximately 50m there is a dropped kerb on the left and a line of tactile paving across the path for a traffic light crossing across Roehampton Lane (photograph 11).
  • Continue straight along Roehampton Lane.
  • The pavement has a concrete slab and brick block surface with a slight gradient.
  • After approximately 25m there is a signpost on the left of the pavement narrowing the available width to 150cm (photograph 12).
  • Continue for another 5m to cross a university access road (photographs 13 and 14).
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs on the far side and level access to the left on the near side with no tactile paving.
  • There is no public vehicle access at this entrance.
  • After crossing and on the immediate right is the pedestrian entrance for Digby Stuart College, with the Stuart Lodge Campus Services building just inside on the left.

Digby Stuart College Pedestrian Entrance to Clarence Lane

  • Continue straight along Roehampton Lane.
  • This section of pavement has a level concrete and brick block surface.
  • After approximately 20m there is a section of tactile paving with a dropped kerb on the left of the pavement (photograph 2).
  • After approximately 140m cross the Roehampton University Deliveries Entrance.
  • This crossing is level with no tactile paving (photographs 5 and 6).
  • Continue straight along Roehampton Lane.
  • The Queen Marys Hospital Bus Stop is located on the left of the pavement after approximately 10m.
  • The pavement has a tarmac surface on the right and a brick and concrete block surface on the left level.
  • After approximately 60m there is a line of tactile paving (photograph 9) for a traffic light controlled crossing on the left.
  • There is a similar line of tactile paving after 30m for another traffic light controlled crossing across Roehampton Lane (photograph 11).
  • Cross the Froebel College entrance after approximately 70m.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs on both sides with no tactile paving (photographs 13 and 14).
  • Continue straight towards Clarence Lane.
  • There is a line of tactile paving for a traffic light controlled crossing on the left (photograph 15) after another 15m.
  • Cross Clarence Lane at the traffic light controlled crossing directly ahead.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides (photographs 17 and 18).
  • There is a control box 104cm high and rotating cones.
  • The crossing has no audible warning.

Clarence Lane to the Alton Estate Entrance

  • Turn right after crossing to walk down Clarence Lane.
  • This pavement has a level, brick block surface.
  • After approximately 35m the pavement surface becomes tarmac.
  • There is also a car park entrance on the left which is level and unmarked (photograph 2).
  • Continue along Clarence Lane.
  • After approximately 50m cross Highcliffe Drive.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile on both sides and is quiet (photographs 5 and 6).
  • Continue straight along Clarence Lane.
  • The pavement here has an even and level, tarmac surface.
  • Along this stretch of pavement there are cars parked on the right of the pavement which may reduce the available width (photographs 7 to 9).
  • A minimum width of 82cm was recorded on the pavement during the survey.
  • Infrequent lampposts along the left of the pavement reduce the available width to approximately 130cm (photograph 8).
  • There is a small crossing after approximately 170m (photographs 10 and 11).
  • This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides.
  • There is an uneven tarmac section in the centre of the crossing.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 10 and 11.
  • On the next 100m section of pavement a series of lampposts and signs posts narrow the pavement to a minimum width of 78cm (photographs 12 and 13).
  • The road traffic along this stretch passes close by, occasionally within 100cm.
  • After approximately 75m there was overgrown foliage narrowing the path width to 80cm for a 15m stretch at the time of survey (photograph 14).
  • After approximately 150m from the small crossing there is a dropped kerb and tactile paving on the right of the pavement for a zebra crossing across Clarence Lane (photograph 15).
  • After approximately 10m turn left onto the concrete set gravel path along the edge of the green space on the left.
  • There is a short steep slope leading onto the path (photograph 17).

Alton Estate Entrance to the Danebury Avenue Crossing

  • Head straight down the path.
  • The path has an even and level, concrete set gravel surface.
  • After approximately 20m, overgrown foliage narrowed the path to approximately 70cm at the time of survey (photograph 2).
  • The gradient drops to a slope with a slight incline downhill.
  • After approximately 50m take the path on the left (photograph 4).
  • This path is on a downward slope with a steep incline and a concrete set gravel surface.
  • After approximately 20m follow the path sharp right to rejoin main path (photograph 5).
  • This route overcomes a flight of steps along the main path (photograph 8).
  • Continue straight along the main path.
  • This path here is even and level, with a concrete set gravel surface, continuing to a slope with a slight gradient after 20m.
  • After approximately 30m cross Sherfield Gardens.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides (photographs 10 and 11).
  • Continue straight ahead bearing left after approximately 5m.
  • This path has a tarmac surface with a slight downhill gradient.
  • After approximately 60m turn right onto Highcliffe Drive (photograph 14).
  • The pavement here is half tarmac/half concrete becoming brick block after approximately 5m, on a downward slope with a slight incline (photograph 15).
  • Turn left after approximately 10m ready to cross Highcliffe Drive.
  • The path has a missing wooden bollard that has left a hole in the block paving that could present a trip hazard (photograph 16).
  • This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides (photographs 17 and 18).
  • Head straight after crossing Highcliffe Drive onto Danebury Avenue.
  • The pavement has a level brick block surface.
  • Continue for 30m to the Danebury Avenue crossing.

Danebury Avenue Crossing to Minstead Gardens Road

  • Turn right to cross Danebury Avenue.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides, with a level central island, also with tactile paving (photographs 1 to 4).
  • Turn left after the crossing and continue down Danebury Avenue.
  • The pavement has an even and level brick block surface.
  • After approximately 15m follow the path to the right.
  • The path has a tarmac surface with a slight gradient.
  • Keep to the right as the path splits again.
  • The path here narrows to 120cm (photograph 8).
  • Turn left after approximately 30m at the junction of 4 paths (photograph 9).
  • The path has a tarmac surface with a slight gradient and is approximately 140cm wide.
  • There are infrequent lampposts narrowing the path to approximately 120cm (photograph 11).
  • Some sections may present an adverse camber (photographs 12 to 14).
  • After approximately 60m there is a short steep section near the top of the path (photographs 15 to 17).
  • After approximately 20m follow the path round to the left as the gradient levels off.
  • The surface here is a mixture of concrete/tarmac repair work and is uneven (photograph 16).
  • After approximately another 15m, exit the path in to Minstead Gardens Road via a dropped kerb and tactile paving (photograph 19).

Minstead Gardens Road to Mount Clare

  • The next section has no pavement and involves proceeding along roads.
  • Turn right onto Minstead Gardens Road taking care to be aware of road traffic.
  • After approximately 10m turn right to enter the Mount Clare Campus access road (photograph 2).
  • The access road is on a steep slope with a mixture of repairs to the tarmac and drain hole covers.
  • After approximately 12m the road levels onto a slope with a very easy incline (photograph 3).
  • After a further 24m there is a dropped kerb on the left hand side of the road providing access to Mount Clare House (photographs 4 and 5).
  • The approach to Mount Clare House is on paving slabs, which may be uneven.
