Introduction

  • This route is from the Maxwell Building main entrance, through the Peel Park Campus to the Tom Husband Leisure Centre entrance.
  • The majority of the buildings on the Peel Park campus can be accessed off this route.
  • This route is approximately 800 meters and should take around 10 minutes to walk.
  • The main hazards on this route are mixed pedestrian and cyclist paths.

Outside Access (Maxwell Building Main Entrance)

  • This information is for the entrance located at the front of the building.
  • The main door(s) open(s) automatically (away from you).
  • Second set of doors View
    • The automatic doors are push pad activated.
    • The door(s) is / are single.
    • The width of the door opening is 86cm (2ft 10in).
    • There is a second set of doors.
    • The door(s) open(s) automatically (towards you).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The width of the door opening is 137cm (4ft 6in).

    • To the left of both sets of automatic doors there are double manual doors 138 cm wide which open towards you (shown in photograph 2).

Area Between the Maxwell Building Main Entrance and the Ramp and Steps

  • This area has a paving slabs surface and is slightly uneven.
  • To access the ramp, follow the path straight ahead then to the left from the automatic door.

Ramp down from the Maxwell Building Main Entrance

  • The ramp has a moderate gradient and a concrete surface.
  • It is 120cm wide and has handrails both sides.

Steps from the Maxwell Building Main Entrance

  • The steps are in front of the entrance.
  • There are 6, medium height, marked steps with handrails on both sides.
  • These steps can be bypassed by using the ramp.

Area in front of Maxwell Building

  • After the ramp or steps, turn right.
  • This area has a brick block paving surface and is slightly uneven.

Crossing the Entrance Road to The Well

  • There are dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides of the road, with a slight lip on the far side.
  • There is a zebra crossing marked on the road, which has a tarmac surface and is slightly uneven.

Path in front of Maxwell Hall

  • The path has a brick block paving surface, which is uneven and has an easy slope up.
  • Maxwell Hall is accessed off this path.

Far Side of Maxwell Hall

  • Past the front of Maxwell Hall turn right.
  • The path along the side of Maxwell Hall has a brick block paving surface until you reach a dropped kerb, which has a tactile surface.
  • Beyond the dropped kerb, the path has a block paving surface, until it ends with another dropped kerb with tactile paving.

Front of Salford Museum and Art Gallery

  • The dropped kerb leads down to a road with a tarmac surface, which is slightly uneven.
  • Carry on straight ahead after the dropped kerb to access the Gilbert Rooms.
  • Otherwise, turn left and follow the pavement next to the car park in front of Salford Museum and Art Gallery. This has a light coloured tarmac surface.
  • Cross the carpark road at the zebra crossing. There is tactile paving on the near side which leads to the museum. Follow the road. This is tarmac with a medium camber for a few meters until you reach the path on the far side of the museum building, turning right to follow it.

Far Side of Salford Museum and Art Gallery

  • Past the museum, take the path to the right.
  • This has an easy slope up and tactile paving, leading to bollards 120cm wide.
  • After the bollards, the path has a tarmac surface with moderate to steep slopes leading down.

Path around the Peel Building

  • At the bottom of the slope continue along the path, which has a tarmac surface.
  • When you go through the bollards, 114cm wide, turn left along the pavement alongside Cockcroft Road. This has a tarmac surface and is slightly uneven.

Cockcroft Road

  • At the end of the path there is a dropped kerb with tactile paving.
  • Here, you can turn left to access the Peel Building.
  • To access the Cockcroft Building, cross both carriageways of Cockcroft Road. There is also a dropped kerb with tactile paving on the central reservation but only a dropped kerb on the far side
  • To continue through the campus, follow Cockcroft Road past the Cockcroft and Newton Buildings. The path has a brick block surface and an easy slope.
  • To access the Newton Building.
  • There is a Blue Badge carpark for the Cockcroft Building by the raised stone and flower beds. Continue straight along the path.

Path in front of the Lady Hale Building and the Clifford Whitworth Library

  • Past the dropped kerb there are bollards, 152cm wide.
  • After that there is a brick block paved path with an easy slope leading down past the Lady Hale Building.
  • The path then levels out as it passes the Clifford Whitworth Library.

Beyond the Clifford Whitworth Library

  • There is a row of bollards and trees that do not impede travel. As you begin to pass the Lady Hale the path continues with an easy downwards slope and brick block paving to the library.
  • Just past the library, the path continues with brick block paving and an easy slope down.
  • Along this path, there is a path leading off to the left, with a medium slope up, leading up to the Chapman Building.
  • To continue through the campus, follow the path straight ahead towards University House.

Path in front of University House

  • The brick block path continues, which has an easy slope leading down to University House.
  • Past the entrance to University House the path continues on to the Leisure Centre.

Path around the side of the Leisure Centre

  • This path starts as block paving.
  • It becomes a concrete path with an easy slope down.
  • The surface then becomes block paving (110cm wide at its narrowest) with a moderate slope down.

Path around the front of the Leisure Centre

  • Follow the path round the corner of the leisure centre, past the dropped kerb.
  • This path has a tarmac surface, with a moderate slope down, 100cm wide at its narrowest.

Path up to the Tom Husband Leisure Centre Entrance

  • There is a section of tactile paving in front of the leisure centre entrance.
  • Leading up to the entrance is a moderate slope with a concrete surface.

Outside Access (Tom Husband Leisure Centre Main Entrance)

  • This information is for the entrance located at the front of the building.
  • The main door(s) open(s) towards you (pull).
  • The door(s) is / are double.
  • The door(s) is / are heavy.
  • The width of the door opening is 168cm (5ft 6in).
