Access Guide
Introduction
- This route plan explains the most accessible route to the rear of the second floor of Block BB if the buildings lifts are out of service.
The route comprises a distance of approximately 100 metres with two slight slopes and one steep slope along the route.
The route requires access to the Alan Turing Building (Block BB) and use of its lift as well as passing through several sets of manual doors. - Related link Alan Turing Building (Block BB).

Outside Access (Engineering and Science Reception Entrance)

Entrance

- This information is for the entrance located at the side of the building, opposite the CVSSP entrance.
- There is ramped/sloped or stepped access at this entrance.
- There is not a bell/buzzer.
- There is not an intercom.
- There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
- The main door(s) open(s) automatically (towards you).
- The door(s) is/are push pad activated.
- The door(s) is / are double.
- The width of the door opening is 150cm (4ft 11in).
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of less than 2cm.

Ramp/Slope

- The ramp/slope is located to the left of the entrance as you face it.
- The ramp/slope does bypass the step(s).
- The ramp/slope gradient is slight.
- The ramp is permanent.
- The width of the ramp is 100cm (3ft 3in).

- There is a similar entrance, without steps, to rear of the building, opposite AB and next to the Department of Engineering entrance (see Photographs 7&8).
AB Engineering and Science Reception Entrance to Road
- Upon exiting the building there is a set of seven medium steps going downwards in front of you with tactile paving at the top. This can be seen in photograph 1.
- To bypass these steps turn right for approximately 5m across the block paving which can be seen in photograph 2.
- Then turn left and head down the tarmac pavement along the slope shown in photographs 3, 4 and 5.
- The slope has a slight gradient and a width of 90cm at its narrowest point which can be seen in photograph 5.
- At the bottom of the slope the surface of the pavement becomes block paving.
- Continue for a few metres until you reach the tactile dropped kerb shown in photographs 6 and 7.
Road to Arthur C. Clarke (Block BA Entrance)
- Cross the tarmac road and head to the dropped kerb to your right on the other side of the road.
- The road can be seen in photographs 1 and 2.
- There is a dropped kerb to your right, this can be seen in photograph 3.
- There is a slight slope leading towards the entrance. This can be seen in photograph 4.

Main Entrance to Lift
- Head forward to the lift, a distance of approximately 6m.
- The flooring is carpet.
Lift (Main)
- There is a lift for public use.
- The lift is located ahead as you enter the main entrance.
- The lift is a standard lift.
- The floors which are accessible by this lift are G, 1 and 2.
- Wall mounted information boards are not provided at lift landings.
- The lift is approximately 6m (6yd 1ft) from the main entrance.
- Staff do not need to be notified for use of the lift.
- The clear door width is 89cm (2ft 11in).
- The dimensions of the lift are 139cm x 150cm (4ft 7in x 4ft 11in).
- There are not separate entry and exit doors in the lift.
- There is a mirror to aid reversing out of the lift.
- The lift does have a visual floor indicator.
- The lift does have an audible announcer.
- The lift does not have a hearing loop system.
- The lift does have Braille markings.
- The lift does have tactile markings.
- The controls for the lift are within 90cm - 120cm from the floor.
- The lighting level in the lift is bright.
Lift to Bridge
- Take the lift to Level 2.
- On exiting the lift the lobby has a carpet floor.
- Proceed towards Block BB by heading through the set of heavy double doors to the front left, approximately 5m from the lift that can be seen in photograph 2.
- These doors have a width of 164cm.
- To leave this area and access the bridge there is a set of heavy double doors with a width of 156cm that open away from you. These can be seen in photographs 4 and 5.
Bridge to BB Entrance
- There is a steep ramp down onto the main area of the bridge with a width of 180cm and handrails on both sides. This can be seen in photograph 1.
- The bridge is approximately 33m in length.
- The CVSSP lift is to your right as you head towards the BB Block, this can be seen in photograph 3.
- Next to the lift is a tactile section at the top of the steps which can be seen in photographs 4 and 5.
