Introduction

    • This route plan explains the most accessible route to floors 2, 3 and 4 in Blocks AA/AB in the event the main lift shared between these two buildings is out of service.
    • The route comprises a distance of approximately 50 metres with one slight slope along the route.
    • The route requires access to the Alan Turing Building (Block BB) and use of its lift as well as passing through three sets of manual doors.

Outside Access (Blocks AA and AB Lift Lobby Entrance)

  • Entrance View
    • This information is for the entrance located on the left hand side Block AB, where Blocks AA and AB meet.
    • There is step free access at this entrance.
    • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
    • The main door(s) open(s) automatically (towards you).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The width of the door opening is 138cm (4ft 6in).

AB Entrance to BB Entrance

  • Upon exiting the Frank Whittle Building (AB) head straight across the road to the rear entrance to the Alan Turing Building which is located directly in front of you after a distance of approximately 11m.
  • There is a slight downhill slope as you head from one building to another.
  • As you exit Building AB, there are loading bays to either side of you and a strip of red paint along the side of the road which may be uneven. This can be seen in photograph 1.
  • There is a tarmac road between the two entrances.
  • On the far side of the road is a tactile drop kerb leading into the Alan Turing Building (BB).

Outside Access (BB Building Rear Entrance)

    • This information is for the entrance located to the rear of the building opposite the entrance to Building AB.
    • There is step free access at this entrance.
    • There is not a bell/buzzer.
    • There is not an intercom.
    • The main door(s) open(s) automatically (towards you).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The width of the door opening is 152cm (4ft 12in).

BB Entrance to Lift

  • Upon entering the Alan Turing Building continue forward along the corridor towards the lift, which will be to your right, a distance of approximately 12m.
  • The surface of the floor along the corridor is carpet.

Lift (BB Building Main Lift)

  • There is a lift for public use.
  • The lift is located to the side of the building, just inside the Engineering and Science Reception entrance.
  • The lift is a standard lift.
  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are G, 2, 3 and 4.
  • Wall mounted information boards are not provided at lift landings.
  • The lift is approximately 12m (13yd 4in) from the rear entrance.
  • Staff do not need to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The clear door width is 160cm (5ft 3in).
  • The dimensions of the lift are 180cm x 260cm (5ft 11in x 8ft 6in).
  • There are not separate entry and exit doors in the lift.
  • There is not a mirror to aid reversing out of the lift.
  • The lift does have a visual floor indicator.
  • The lift does have an audible announcer.
  • The lift does not have a hearing enhancement system.
  • The lift does not have Braille markings.
  • The lift does have tactile markings.
  • The controls for the lift are within 90cm - 120cm from the floor.
  • The lighting level in the lift is good.

BB Lift to Bridge - Second Floor

  • Upon exiting the lift on the second floor turn left and head to the bridge located in the lift lobby, a distance of approximately 14m.
  • The flooring here may be shiny.
  • There is seating between the lift and the stairwell.
  • The door to the stairwell is single with a locked leaf extension leaf, has a width of 88cm and opens away from you. This can be seen in photograph 4.

BB Lift to Bridge - Third and Fourth Floors

  • There are similar routes from the lift on the third and fourth floors.
  • The route on the third floor can be seen in photographs 1 to 3. It is the same as the second floor with seating available.
  • The route on the fourth floor can be seen in photographs 4 to 6. This route has no seating and has a carpet surface instead of a shiny vinyl surface.

Entrance (Bridge Entrance)

    • This information is for the entrance located in the stairwell on the second floor of the Alan Turing Building (BB).
    • There is step free access at this entrance.
    • There is not a bell/buzzer.
    • There is not an intercom.
    • The main door(s) open(s) away from you (push).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The door(s) may be difficult to open.
    • The width of the door opening is 164cm (5ft 5in).
  • Second Set of Doors View
    • There is a second set of doors.
    • The main door(s) open(s) towards you (pull).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The door(s) may be difficult to open.
    • The width of the door opening is 164cm (5ft 5in).
