Introduction

  • This guide details the route from the City Reception in the Charles Hasting Building to the Art House.

Reception (City Reception at the Charles Hastings Building)

  • City Reception is located in the lobby area at the front of the Charles Hastings building.
  • The reception area is clearly visible from the entrance.
  • There is step free access to this reception area, via lift.
  • The lighting levels in the reception area are medium.
  • The reception desk/counter is medium height (77cm - 109cm).
  • There is a low section of the counter (76cm or below) available.
  • There is a clear knee recess beneath the low/lowered counter.
  • The desk is staffed.
  • There is a hearing assistance system.
  • The type of system is a portable loop.
  • The hearing system is available only on request.
  • The hearing assistance system is not signed.
  • Staff are trained to use the hearing system.
  • There is a touch screen.
  • Comments View
    • There is seating in the reception lobby area.
    • The seating does have armrests.

Lift (Accessible Lift Entrance)

  • There is a lift for public use.
  • The lift is located to the right of the main doors as you exit the building.
  • The lift is a standard lift.
  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are LG and G.
  • Wall mounted information boards are not provided at lift landings.
  • The lift is approximately 4m (4yd 1ft) from the City reception desk.
  • Staff do not need to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The clear door width is 90cm (2ft 11in).
  • The dimensions of the lift are 112cm x 140cm (3ft 8in x 4ft 7in).
  • There are separate entry and exit doors in the lift.
  • There is not a mirror to aid reversing out of the lift.
  • The lift does have a visual floor indicator.
  • The lift does have an audible announcer.
  • The lift does not have a hearing loop system.
  • The lift does have Braille markings.
  • The lift does have tactile markings.
  • The controls for the lift are within 90cm - 120cm from the floor.
  • The lighting level in the lift is medium.

Outside Access (Accessible Lift Entrance)

Outside Access (Main Exit From City Reception at the Charles Hastings Building)

Route From City Reception to the Main Gate

  • City reception is located within the Charles Hastings building.
  • After exiting the Charles Hasting building main entrance/exit either via the stairs or lift turn left and ahead are some entrance gates.
  • The pathway leading to the entrance gates is level and consists of block paving and is shown in photographs 1 and 2.
  • The entrance gates open towards you (pull), are permanently held open, have an opening width of 115cm and are shown in photographs 3 and 4.
  • There is a steep slope at the far side of the gate as shown in photographs 5 and 6.
  • There is also an intercom at the far side of the gate as shown in photograph 7.
  • The height of the intercom is 120cm.
  • Once you have passed through the gate, turn left onto Infirmary Walk which is shown in photograph 8.

Main Gate to Castle Street Travelling Along Infirmary Walk

  • Once you have passed through the gate, turn left onto Infirmary Walk which is shown in photograph 1.
  • At the start of Infirmary Walk the pathway is 126cm wide due to the placement of a tree, as shown in photograph 2.
  • Just past the tree, the pathway widens and is over 150cm wide.
  • There is an easy slope here going downwards, as shown in photographs 3 and 4.
  • After the downwards slope, the pathway becomes level until the corner of Infirmary Walk and Castle Street, as shown in photograph 5.
  • At the end of Infirmary Walk, turn left onto Castle Street.
  • There is a steep slope leading from Infirmary Walk to Castle Street, as shown in photograph 6.

Castle Street to the Toucan Crossing

  • At the end of Infirmary Walk, turn left onto Castle Street.
  • There is a steep slope leading from Infirmary Walk to Castle Street, as shown in photograph 1.
  • There is a pathway on Castle Street on the left and a cycle path on the right.
  • The pathway is over 150cm wide and the cycle path to the right is marked by a white line, as shown in photograph 2.
  • There is tactile paving running from left to right along the pathway just before the start of the cycle path and pathway as shown in photographs 2 and 3.
  • There is an easy slope running from left to right on the tactile paving and some of the tactile paving is uneven, as shown in photographs 4 and 5.
  • Continue along Castle Street for approximately 25m.
  • Although Castle Street is level, there is a very easy slope leading down towards the Toucan pedestrian crossing, as shown in photograph 6.
  • There is another set of tactile paving running from left to right located on the path way approximately 5m before the toucan crossing, as shown in photograph 7.
  • This tactile paving marks the start/end of the cycle path on the pathway and is level.
  • On the right, just past the second set of tactile paving is a Toucan crossing, as shown in photograph 8.
  • You will need to cross Caste Street at this crossing point.

Toucan Crossing to the Art House Main Entrance

  • There is tactile paving on the dropped kerb at the toucan crossing.
  • The dropped kerb causes an easy ramp leading from left to right on the pavement, shown in photographs 1 and 2.
  • There are push buttons to operate the crossing control on the posts at the crossing on the left and right, as shown in photographs 3 and 4.
  • The height of the push buttons is 105cm on both posts.
  • The post on the right has visual signs to let you know when it is safe to cross.
  • There is an audible beeper when it is safe to cross.
  • Please be aware that this is a Toucan Crossing and is also used by cycles.
  • The road to cross Castle Street is tarmac and although it is level has a very easy slope running upwards to the middle of the crossing, then downwards to the other side, as shown in photographs 5 and 6.
  • At the other side of the crossing there is tactile paving running in front of you and to the left, as shown in photograph 7.
  • There is also a dropped kerb creating an easy slope running upwards on the far pavement, as shown in photographs 8 and 9.
  • The far pavement is tarmac.
  • At the other side of the crossing continue straight ahead to the Art House Concourse.
  • There are bollards just before the Art House Concourse, as shown in photograph 10.
  • The minimum width between the bollards is 171cm.
  • Once on the Art House Concourse, which is level, turn right and the Art House entrance is ahead of you, as shown in photographs 11 and 12.
