Route Guide - Blair Street to Mercat Cross

  • Directions to the Mercat Cross from the Blair Street Office and Underground Vaults:- From the Blair Street Underground Vaults, turn right to go up the hill (photographs 1 and 2). The slope on Blair Street is steep. The pavement is paved with slabs that are uneven in places. The width of the pavement is reduced in parts by bins, signposts, and other street furniture.
  • Continue approximately 60 metres to the corner by The Tron Comedy venue, where the road turns to the right (photographs 3 to 5).
  • At this corner there is a deep kerb to either side of the road and an uneven cobbled road surface. It is not advised for anyone with mobility or visual impairment to cross at this point.
  • Turn right to follow Blair Street to the junction with South Bridge, approximately 20 metres (photograph 6). The pavement is paved with slabs that are cracked and uneven in parts. The slope at this section is almost level.
At the junction turn left to cross over Blair Street (photograph 7).
  • The road is raised at this point with level kerbs and well-pointed blocks to make for a more even surface. There is tactile paving on each pavement marking the crossing point.
Blair Street is one way with vehicles approaching from the right.
  • After crossing, continue up South Bridge past the rear of Tron Kirk, approximately 40 metres, to the junction with High Street (photographs 8 to 9).
  • The pavement narrows to approximately 120cm with a drop kerb on the right. There is a slight slope up along this section.
  • At High Street turn left to go up the Royal Mile (photograph 10). The pavement is broad with level kerbs, but some vehicles still access the roadway. This is marked by low unmarked bollards approximately 50cm high.
Continue up High Street, past Tron Kirk and Hunter Square on the left to the arched entranceway to the pedestrianised area of the High Street (Royal Mile) (photograph 11).
  • Please note that High Street (Royal Mile) can become busy with pedestrians, particularly during the summer months and at festival times.
  • Continue up High Street for 100 metres, past telephone boxes and the lion head water fountain to the Adam Smith monument and statue (photographs 12 to 16).
  • The slope here is slight, with stone paving that may be uneven in parts. There are also uneven block paving areas at entrances (alleyways and pathways off the main road).
The pavement is again lined by low bollards on the right, and occasionally by café seating areas on the left.
  • At the Adam Smith statue, which is on the corner of the junction of High Street and Parliament Square, bear slightly left toward the rear of the cathedral. The Mercat Cross is directly ahead (photograph 17).
To get to the Cross, there is a blocked paved roadway with unmarked 50cm high bollards to either side (photographs 18 to 19).
