Route to (St George's Chapel)

  • There is a surfaced path leading down to the Chapel from Middle Ward Shop.
    The main path leads to the South Entrance which has stepped access.
    There is an alternative route to the North Entrance, which has step-free access, please speak to a member of staff to use this entrance.
    There is step-free access along the path to the North Entrance.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.

Entrance (South Side - Stepped Access)

  • The entrance surveyed is located on Chapel Hill.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There are 3 steps, which are clearly marked, with handrails on both sides.
  • Steps are split with a resting area.
  • The handrails do not cover all steps.
  • There are double manual doors which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 156cm.
  • There is a second set of manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 160cm.
  • These doors are held open in warmer weather.

Entrance (North Side - Step-free Access)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the side of the Chapel.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double manual doors which opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 160cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • Visitors are escorted to these doors which are opened for them.

Getting Around (the Chapel)

  • There is step-free access, via ramps, throughout the majority of the building.
  • The majority of walkway widths on the route to the room are under 120cm.
  • There are bench seats and chairs without armrests available throughout the building.
  • All flooring in the area is smooth and even.
  • Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • Lighting levels are low in some areas.
  • There is background noise here which varies, depending on the time of day.
  • There are portable ramps available to overcome the steps around the chapel, please ask member of staff for assistance.

Services in the Chapel

  • The building has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • Services are available in Braille format.
  • Large print Psalters and Hymnals are available.

Ramp or Slope and Steps (Access from Nave to Quire Aisle)

  • The ramp is slight and between 75cm and 150cm wide.
  • The ramp does not have handrails.
  • There are 3 steps.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the left going up.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There is an additional second permanent ramp at this point.
    The second ramp has a slight gradient and has handrails on both sides.
    Please ask member of staff for assistance.

Ramp or Slope and Steps (Access from the North Quire Aisle to the Quire)

  • The ramp is slight and under 75cm wide.
  • The ramp does not have handrails.
  • There are 3 steps.
  • The steps are clearly marked with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There is a single hand hold post either side of the steps.
    Please ask member of staff for assistance.

Ramp or Slope and Steps (Access from the Nave to the South Quire Aisle)

  • The ramp is slight.
  • The ramp does not have handrails.
  • There is 1 step.
  • The step is not clearly marked with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the step.
  • Please ask member of staff for assistance.

Ramp or Slope and Steps (Access in the Quire)

  • The ramp is slight.
  • The ramp does not have handrails.
  • There is 1 step.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • Please ask member of staff for assistance.

Exit (from Chapel to the Chapel Shop)

  • The exit is located to the rear of the Chapel.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the exit.
  • The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with a handrail on the left going up.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There are 2 steps, which are clearly marked, with no handrails.
  • The steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There are double manual doors which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 108cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the exit with a height of less than 1.5cm.

Shop (The Chapel)

  • There is step-free level access into the shop.
  • The majority of aisle widths are under 150cm.
  • Flooring in the shop is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven paving/tiles.
  • There is step-free level access around the shop.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 104cm.
  • There is a low level counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The checkout area has windows, TVs and glazed screens or mirrors which could adversely affect the ability of someone to lip read .
  • The counter does not have a hearing assistance system.
  • Services/facilities available in the shop include: a portable card machine for payment and a member of staff to provide assistance.

Exit (to Chapel Hill)

  • The exit is located to the right of the shop.
  • There is step-free level access at the exit.
  • There are double manual doors which open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 160cm.
  • There is a second set of manual doors, which open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 125cm.
