Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the grounds include The Christmas Fayre is held annually and includes a large range of market stalls, street entertainment and a funfair.

Getting Here

  • By Road.
  • Cathedral Square car park is approximately 2.5 miles from Junction 7 of the M5 via the A44 London Road with direct links to Birmingham and Cheltenham.
  • Parking.
  • There is ample parking at Cathedral Square and other nearby car parks.
  • By Bus.
  • There are several bus stops around Cathedral Square with direct buses available to Evesham, Redditch, Battenhill and Worcester.
  • First Bus Park & Ride service (number 910) is a quick and cheap way of getting to and from the Fayre.
  • The Park & Ride goes from County Hall (WR5 2NP) to Worcester Crowngate Bus Station (WR1 3PA), which is just a short walk away from the Victorian Fayre.
  • For local buses there will be a series of enhanced evening services on Friday and Saturday that will run later than normal for services: 30, 34, 35, 44/X44 and 144

  • By Train.
  • Worcester city centre is served by two train stations:
  • Foregate Street Station (located 0.3 miles from the Fayre) and has direct links to London Paddington, Hereford, Birmingham New Street and Malvern.
  • Shrub Hill Station (located 0.6 miles from the Fayre)

Parking (Cathedral Square)

  • The venue does not have its own car park.

Route from Cathedral Square Car Park to Cathedral Square

  • To enter Cathedral Square from the Cathedral Square car park, take the lift to the ground floor and turn left out of the lift and then right into the corridor directly ahead.
  • There are double manual doors to exit the lift lobby area.
  • The doors open away from you (push).
  • The doors are heavy.
  • The width of the door opening is 142cm.
  • The corridor is level and comprises of stone tiles.
  • The flooring is shiny and could be mistaken as wet.
  • There are some surfaces with large repeating patterns that could be mistaken for steps.
  • At the end of the corridor turn left.
  • Ahead is a set of double doors.
  • The doors are automatic and open away from you.
  • The width of the door opening is 173cm.
  • After going through the automatic doors, you will arrive in Cathedral Square.
  • There is now a choice of 2 directions.
  • Ahead is a slight slope without handrails. This slope will take you down to the main area of Cathedral Square.
  • Alternatively, there are 3 clearly marked medium height steps, without handrails and with tactile paving at the top and bottom.
  • These steps will also take you to the main area of Cathedral Square.

  • If you turn right after the double automatic doors, the ramp and steps can be avoided and there is level access to the High Street.

Access Points to the Christmas Market

  • All access points to the streets that are pedestrianised for the duration of the Christmas Market are controlled by Hostile Vehicle Management Systems.
  • There are access points to most entrances to the Christmas Market and are located on the following streets: -
  • High Street, Angel Place, The Shambles, Mealcheapen Street, Cornmarket, Charles Street, Union Street, Cardinals Hat (Friary Court), Cathedral Square and Copenhagen Street.
  • The access points have an opening width of 86cm and there is a short, steep ramp to enter and exit these.
  • The ramps does not have handrails.

Route from Coach Drop Off Point D to Cornmarket

  • Coach drop off point D is on City Walls Road.
  • From the pavement take the left hand pathway for approximately 20 metres and turn right onto Cornmarket.
  • The pavement along City Walls Road is level and the surface is tarmac.
  • Access to the Christmas Market is via the Hostile Vehicle Management System.

Route from Coach Drop Off Point C to Charles Street

  • Coach Drop off C is located on City Walls Road.
  • Take the left hand pathway.
  • It is approximately 30 metres to Charles Street.
  • The pavement is level and is tarmac.
  • There is a dropped kerb crossing the pavement just before the turning into Charles Street.
  • The dropped kerb creates an easy slope across the pavement.
  • This dropped kerb has tactile paving.
  • Turn right onto Charles Street, there is another dropped kerb, this time without tactile paving.
  • The second dropped kerb leads onto Charles Street and into the Christmas Market.
  • Access to the Christmas Market is via the Hostile Vehicle Management System.

Route from Coach Drop Off Point B to Charles Street

  • Coach drop off point B is located along City Walls Road.
  • Take the right hand pathway.
  • It is approximately 42 metres to Charles Street.
  • The pathway is tarmac and is level.
  • There are posts for a road sign obstructing the pathway.
  • The width between the posts is 123cm.
  • Turn left onto Charles Street.
  • There is a dropped kerb leading onto Charles Street.
  • The dropped kerb does not have tactile paving.
  • The Christmas Market is then ahead.
  • Access to the Christmas Market is via the Hostile Vehicle Management System.

Route from Coach Drop Off Point A to Union Street

  • Coach drop off point A is located along City Walls Road.
  • Take the right hand pathway to Union Street.
  • It is approximately 80 metres to Union Street.
  • The pavement is tarmac.
  • There is a slight easy gradient leading downwards.
  • There is then a slight easy gradient leading upwards.
  • Ahead the pavement then becomes level.
  • There is then a slight slope created by a dropped kerb crossing the pathway.
  • The dropped kerb has tactile paving.
  • There is also a traffic signal post on the pathway at the dropped kerb, which reduces the width to 123cm.
  • Turn left onto Union Street.
  • There is a dropped kerb leading from the pathway onto Union Street.
  • The dropped kerb does not have tactile paving.
  • Union Street is tarmac, level and leads to Friar Street and the Christmas Market.
  • Access to the Christmas Market is via the Hostile Vehicle Management System.

Cathedral Square

  • The surface of Cathedral Square is concrete paving tiles.
  • Cathedral Square is pedestrianised.
  • There is step free access throughout Cathedral Square via slopes.
  • There is ample room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre.
  • There is public seating within and around Cathedral Square.
  • The seating does not have armrests.
  • There are market stalls and an entertainment platform within Cathedral Square.
  • Market stalls are medium height.

Level Change (Cathedral Square)

  • There is a ramp/slope to access this area/service.
  • The ramp/slope gradient is slight.
  • There is a/are step(s) to access this area/service.
  • The step(s) is/are located running from the rear left to the front right of the square.

  • There is step free access throughout High Street.
  • There is ample room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre.
  • There are some slight slopes along High Street, running from left to right.
  • The bench seating along High Street is removed for the duration of the Christmas Market.
  • There are a range of market stalls along High Street, all of which vary in height from medium to high.

Mealcheapen Street

  • Mealcheapen Street runs from The Shambles to Cornmarket.
  • The street is pedestrianised.
  • The surface of the street is block paving.
  • There are some slight slopes running from left to right along the street.
  • There is step free access throughout the street.
  • There is no public seating available in Mealcheapen Street.
  • The market stalls vary in height from medium to high.

Cornmarket

  • Cornmarket is located between City Walls Road and Mealcheapen Street.
  • There are access points to enter Cornmarket from City Walls Road.
  • Access to the Christmas Market is via the Hostile Vehicle Management System.
  • The surface of Cornmarket is tarmac, block paving and concrete paving slabs.
  • There is step free access throughout Cornmarket.
  • There is ample room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre.
  • There is no public seating in Cornmarket.
  • The market stalls vary in height from low, medium and high.

New Street and Friar Street

  • New Street is located between Cornmarket and Friar Street.
  • New Street is pedestrianised during the Christmas Market.
  • Friar Street continues from New Street to Deansway.
  • The surface of New Street and Friar Street on the roadway is tarmac leading from Cornmarket which changes to block paving towards Friar Street.
  • There is a mixture of concrete paving slabs and block paving along the pavement.
  • There are some uneven surfaces creating a steep slope on the block paved area on the roadway.
