Introduction

  • This guide describes step-free walking routes between London Waterloo Station and the Union Jack Club in Sandell Street.
  • Route 1 uses the lift between the station concourse (Exit 2) and Waterloo Road.
  • This route is approximately 75m long.
  • There is a busy road to cross using a pedestrian-controlled crossing.
  • If the lift is unavailable, the alternative route is from station Exits 2 or 3 to Waterloo Road using Cab Road and Tenison Way.

  • Potential hazards include uneven surfaces and congested pavements, including some areas shared with cyclists.
  • The station can get extremely busy at times during peak months or certain times of day, for example rush hour.

Passengers arriving at Waterloo East Station

  • Passengers arriving at Waterloo East Station follow the signs towards Waterloo Mainline Station to exit.
  • There are accessible toilets on platform B/C and in the main station.
  • There are long, steep ramps up from platform level to a covered walkway connecting with the main station.
  • There is an exit directly from this walkway to Sandell Street, signposted to the Union Jack Club, but there are 78 steps down to street level and no lift in this location.
  • Continue past this exit to the ticket barriers at the end of the walkway.
  • This area is at the balcony level of the mainline station.
  • The lift down to the main concourse is on the left after the ticket barriers.
  • At concourse level, leave the lift then turn left.
  • Walk past Marks and Spencer.
  • Follow the signs for Exit 2.

Passengers arriving at Waterloo Mainline Station

  • There is level access from platforms 1-19 to the main concourse.
  • There is step-free access by slope from the lower concourse and platforms 20-24 to the main concourse.
  • There are accessible toilets on the main concourse, opposite platform 19, and on the lower concourse, near platforms 20-24.
  • There is a Changing Places toilet on the lower concourse.
  • On the main concourse, follow the signs to Exit 2, opposite platforms 3-5.
  • There are escalators down to Waterloo Road.
  • The lift down to Waterloo Road is on the right, beyond the escalators.

Passengers arriving at Waterloo Underground Station - Jubilee Line

  • Waterloo is served by the Jubilee, Northern, Bakerloo and Waterloo and City underground lines.
  • There is step-free access from train to street on the Jubilee Line only.
  • Use the lift from the platform up to the Waterloo Road concourse.
  • Exit the station onto Waterloo Road.

Route 1 - Step-free route using the lift to Waterloo Road

  • Take the lift from the main concourse Exit 2 down to the Waterloo Road concourse.
  • There is an easy slope to exit the station onto Waterloo Road.
  • There is a wide opening with no doors.
  • There are large bollards with wide gaps between them outside the station entrance
  • Turn left and walk approximately 10m to the pedestrian crossing.
  • The pedestrian crossing has dropped kerbs with tactile paving.
  • There are push-buttons on both sides of the tactile paving.
  • There are audible and visible signals of the safe time to cross.
  • There are rotating cones below the push-buttons to show the crossing phase.
  • Cross the road.
  • On the opposite side, turn left.
  • There may be racks for free newspapers and pavement signage in this area.
  • After 15m, take the first right turn into Sandell Street.
  • The pavements have some uneven surfaces.
  • The entrance to the Union Jack Club is on the right, after approximately 30m.
  • There is a gate leading to a platform lift, or steps up to the club entrance.

Route 2 - Step-free route avoiding lift

  • From the main concourse, leave the station using Exit 2 or Exit 3 onto Station Approach/ Cab Road.
  • There is a taxi tank in this area.
  • There is an accessible toilet in this area, facing the taxi rank.
  • Turn left and go down the long slope next to the station building (approximately 190m).
  • There are bus stops in this area and the pavement may be congested.
  • There are some large bollards across the pavement.
  • At the bottom of the slope, near the station main entrance, turn right to cross Cab Road using the zebra crossing.
  • There are cycle routes across this area.
  • Use the second zebra crossing to cross Mepham Street.
  • Both crossings have dropped kerbs with tactile paving.
  • Continue ahead between bollards, then under the railway arch.
  • From the arch, turn right onto Tenison Way.
  • Pass the bus stops.
  • There are narrow areas, past the ventilation shaft.
  • After 100m, use the zebra crossing to cross the side road.
  • Continue ahead to the pedestrian crossing below the railway bridge.
  • Cross Waterloo Road at the pedestrian crossing.
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving.
  • There are visual signals but no audible signals at the crossing.
  • There are rotating cones below the push-button boxes to give a tactile signal of the safe crossing phase.
  • Turn right along Waterloo Road.
  • After 30m, cross the side road Alaska Street.
  • There is two-way traffic on Alaska Street.
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at the crossing point.
  • There are no signals for pedestrians.
  • Continue ahead along Waterloo Road.
  • After 35m, cross the side road, Sandell Street.
  • There is one-way traffic turning into Sandell Street.
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at the crossing point.
  • There are no signals for pedestrians.
  • After crossing, turn left into Sandell Street.
  • After about 30m, the entrance to the Union Jack Club is on the right.
  • There is a gate leading to a platform lift or steps to enter.
