Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, binoculars, magnifying glass, soft toy, torch and accessible maps.
  • You can borrow these from the visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: a mobility scooter. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (Arboretum)

  • From the book shop entrance/exit turn right and then left before the archway.
    After approximately 80 metres turn left between the South Front and the Great Lawn.
    Continue for approximately 120 metres, down and up two slight slopes, turn right.
    Continue for approximately 200 metres then turn left before a gate.
    Go passed the play area to reach the arboretum.
    There are several stepped accesses to the arboretum along this 200 metre path.
  • The route to the area includes more than 3 steps without a handrail.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, muddy and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located to the left off the path at the end of the Great Lawn.
  • Access into the area is via steps and a steep ramp/slope (which bypasses any steps).
  • The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are 6 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: a playground and woodland.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: wood bark and grass.
  • Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There are more than 3 steps without handrails and steep ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas .
  • There are not any bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • Playground View
    • There is a fenced play area with an entrance over 100cm wide.
    • There is a route around the play equipment which is not firm and even, but is over 150cm wide.
    • The play equipment is in easy reach for seated and standing users, and users of different heights.
    • The following play experiences are available: climbing, balancing, crawling and viewing.
