Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, binoculars, magnifying glass, soft toy, torch and accessible maps.
  • You can borrow these from the visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: a mobility scooter. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (Gardens)

  • Turn right out of the visitor reception exit up a slight slope and right again along the tarmac road to the house.
    Take the path to the left towards the rear of the house, where you will reach the beginning of the garden grounds.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, concrete and gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located after you have passed to the left of the house.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: parkland, woodland, formal gardens and gardens.
  • The outdoor facilities also include: Arboretum.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: concrete or tarmac, grass, gravel and uncompacted earth.
  • Footpaths are available in all of the outdoor spaces.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are steep ramps/slopes without handrails, slight ramps/slopes without handrails and more than 3 steps without handrails in the main areas .
  • There are bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • Playground View
    • There is a fenced play area with an entrance over 100cm wide.
    • There are no firm and even routes over 150cm wide round the play equipment.
    • The play equipment is not in easy reach for a range of users.
    • The following play experiences are available: climbing and balancing.

Hikes and Trails

  • From the rear of the house, with the South Front lawn in front of you, there are two accessable walks available - to the left down to the Great Lawn or to the right passed the house, into the Garden Rooms.
    Regardless of which option you take, you are able to visit the Garden Rooms, Glass House, Walled Garden, the Vine Walk and Folly at the far end of the garden, as well as the edge of the Arboretum.
    Most of the route is on tarmac path ways, with some gravel path ways.
    There are sections that can be muddy or wet if it has been raining.
  • The walk is not open 24 hours.
  • None of the paths are lit at night.
  • The route includes the following surfaces: tarmac, concrete and paving slabs.
  • The route is not clearly signposted.
  • The route has handheld maps.
  • Seating is available on the route.

Picnic Area

  • The following information describes the picnic area located in front of the book shop and Gallery cafe.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are available.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 65cm.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to compacted earth and grass.
