Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses, binoculars, magnifying glass, activity sheets, soft toy, communication cards, accessible maps and sensory maps.

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: a tramper. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (the House)

  • Turn left out of the welcome hut and go down the track, continue through an open gate and pass to the left of the Piggery Tea Room.
    After the stables, but before you reach the house, follow the track left down a slope.
    Then turn right through open gates to face the front of the house. To the left there is a ramp, which bypasses the steps, take this then carry on through the archway.
    The entrance to the house is on the left via a ramp.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope and includes up to 3 steps without a handrail.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel, muddy, cobbles, paving stones and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located in the courtyard.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a single manual door which opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 88cm.
  • The entrance opening does not have a minimum height of 200cm.
  • The entrance opening height is 194cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • The entrance can be used by wheelchair users to exit the house.

Tour

  • The tour takes approximately 1 hour.
  • There is stepped access along the tour route.
  • There are doorways or openings used on the tour which are under 75cm wide.
  • The majority of walkway widths are under 120cm.
  • The tour can not be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
  • Areas with stepped access only can be experienced by visitors via an information booklet and a video on tablet or mobile phone.
  • Different tour types are available which may vary the tour time and route.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
  • Tour information includes the following formats: information booklets, Braille and television/screen.
  • The tour has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There are armchairs, sofas, bench seats and a mixture of chairs with and without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs and some of the tables.
  • Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet and uneven floorboards.
  • Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good throughout the tour route.
  • There is stepped access to some areas on the ground floor.
    The house is not open to the public when it has been let out as a holiday let.

Stairs

  • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1.
  • There are 17 steps between floors.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the right going up.
  • The highest step is 20cm high.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Exit

  • The exit is located at the rear of the house.
  • There is not step-free access at the exit.
  • There are 2 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 73cm.
  • The exit opening does not have a minimum height of 200cm.
  • The exit opening height is 172cm.
  • There are 4 steps beyond the exit, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • The steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).

Standard Toilet
