Introduction

  • The following information describes the route along Thames Street from the Queen Victoria Statue (Junction with Castle Hill) northwards to cross Datchet Road, and continuing ahead to the Eton Walkway over the Thames.
  • This route is approximately 0.3 miles (450m).
  • The route takes approximately 6-10 minutes to walk.
  • The route leads you past two bus stops, at the start of the route and opposite the Theatre Royal.
  • The surface of paths along the route consists of block paving, and brick.
  • The potential hazards on this route include; steep slopes, road crossings with no road markings or controls, and narrow pavements.
  • The guide is split into the following sections:-

  • 2. Jubilee Arch to Junction with River Street
  • 3. Junction with River Street to Datchet Road Crossing
  • 4. Datchet Road Crossing to Eton Walkway

Getting Here

  • Thames Street is approximately 7 miles from Junction 6 of the M4 via the A332, which gives you direct links to the M25, Central London, Reading, Swindon and Bristol. Thames Street runs north from the City Centre to the Thames River. At the north end it crosses the Thames via the Eton Walkway and joins Brocas Street/Eton High Street. At the south end it becomes Windsor High Street (B3022).
  • Several public car parks are available close to Thames Street, including the River Street Car Park and the Castle Car Park.
  • There is a bus stop within 150 metres of the venue.
  • Bus stops along Thames Street provide direct services to Slough, Heathrow, Bracknell, Dedworth and Legoland.

  • The nearest Railway Station is Windsor & Eton Central.
  • Windsor & Eton Central is located in the Royal Windsor Station shopping area on Thames Street. There is step-free access to all platforms at this station. There is a direct train service to Slough. Windsor & Eton Riverside is located on Datchet Road, approximately 100m from Thames Street. There is a service available to London Waterloo. There is step-free access to all platforms at this station.

  • There are two car parks a short way down River Street, the River Street Car Park, and the Castle Pay and Display Car Park.
  • The River Street Car Park is located on River Street, and is operated by Windsor and Maidenhead Council.
  • This car park is shown in photographs 1 and 2.
  • Payment is by card or RingGo app.
  • This is an open air car park.
  • The Castle Pay and Display Car Park is located on River Street, and is operated by UK Parking Ltd.
  • This car park is shown in photographs 3 and 4.
  • This is an open air car park.

  • On Street Parking
  • There are several Blue Badge bays on Thames Street.
  • Parking is from 06:00 to 18:00, with a maximum stay of 3 hours.
  • On street parking is shown in photographs 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Thames Street - Queen Victoria Statue (Junction with Castle Hill) to Jubilee Arch

  • The distance from the junction with Castle Hill to River Street is approximately 50m.
  • This section begins with the junction with Castle Hill (and the statue of Queen Victoria) on the right, and the pedestrianised shopping area of Peascod Street on the left.
  • The pathway is block paving.
  • The surface is a slight uphill slope until outside Harte & Garter, after which the path becomes a steep downhill slope.
  • On the left hand pavement, outside Barclays is the Barclays Bus Stop (photograph 3).
  • Bus services at this stop include 2, 8, 8A, 702 and 703.
  • This bus stop provides some sheltered seating.
  • After the bus shelter on the left, the pavement crosses a driveway.
  • The kerb here is low and the road surface is raised slightly (photograph 5).
  • There is on street Blue Badge parking by the left pavement (photographs 6 and 7).
  • Parking is from 06:00 to 18:00, with a maximum stay of 3 hours.
  • Note that on some days, activities around Windsor Castle may cause these parking spaces to be closed.
  • After the parking bays, there is a pedestrian crossing (photographs 9 and 10).
  • There is tactile paving on both sides of the crossing, and a raised road surface.
  • The road surface here is brick.
  • The crossing is not signed or marked on the road.
  • On the left, there is a pedestrianised walk called Jubilee Arch, leading to the Windsor Royal Station Shopping Centre (photographs 11 and 12).
  • Jubilee Arch slopes steeply towards the shopping centre.
  • The surface is paving slabs and brick.
  • There are bollards at the start of Jubilee Arch.
  • The bollards have good contrast with the ground.
  • Bollard height is 110cm.
  • The minimum gap between bollards is 115cm.
  • Throughout this section, there is bench seating along the right hand pavement outside Windsor Castle (photographs 13 and 14).

Jubilee Arch to Junction with River Street

  • The distance from the junction with Jubilee Arch to River Street is approximately 140m.
  • The pavement on both sides is block paving.
  • There is a steep slope downhill, levelling as it comes to the junction with River Street.
  • By the right hand pavement at this point there is a taxi rank (photograph 1).
  • Bench seating continues along the right hand pavement, beneath the west wall of Windsor Castle (photograph 2).
  • On the left of Thames Street, outside WHSmith the pavement widens briefly and there is a bus stop with sheltered seating (photograph 3).
  • Bus services at this stop include 2, 8, 8A, 702 and 703.
  • After the bus stop there is Blue Badge parking (photographs 5 and 6).
  • Parking is from 06:00 to 18:00, for a maximum of 3 hours.
  • There is a pedestrian crossing as the road curves to the right (photographs 10 and 11).
  • There is tactile paving on both sides of the crossing, and a raised road surface.
  • The road surface here is brick.
  • The crossing is not signed or marked.
  • The road continues to slope downwards after the curve.
  • After the crossing, there is a walkway on the left (photograph 13), leading to Goswell Road and Alexandra Gardens and the Coach Park (0.2 miles, or about 4 minutes), by steps.
  • The steps are pictured in photograph 14.
  • Just before the junction with River Street, the pavement narrows.
  • There are bollards across both sides of the pavement at this point (photographs 17 and 18).
  • Bollard height is 105cm.
  • The gap between bollards is 118cm.
  • There is a gate which can be used to close the road at this point (during ceremonial occasions at the castle, for instance). When open, it creates a narrowing of the right hand pavement (photograph 14).
  • The road surface is here is brick.
  • The left hand pavement curves to the left and slopes steeply downward onto River Street.
  • Although there is no designated pedestrian crossing over River Street, the road surface here is at the same level and the pavement, and there is tactile paving and bollards (photographs 15 and 16).
  • River Street is a one-way street, with traffic flowing away from Thames Street.
  • River Street can be used to reach the Coach Park and Shopmobility, which are 0.2 miles (about 4 minutes walk) away.

Junction with River Street to Datchet Road Crossing

  • The distance from the junction with River Street to the Datchet Road crossing is approximately 130m.
  • Pass the junction with River Street and continue along Thames Street.
  • The surface here is paving blocks.
  • The pavement here is level.
  • The pavement on the left is broad after the River Street crossing, but narrows after the Theatre Royal, where there is some on street Blue Badge parking.
  • This parking is shown in photograph 3.
  • Parking here is for Blue Badge holders only.
  • Parking is for a maximum of three hours between 06:00 and 18:00.
  • The right hand pavement passes a bus stop with two shelters (photographs 4, 5 and 6).
  • This is the Theatre Royal Bus Stop (Stop G).
  • Bus services at this stop include 2, 8, 8A, 702 and 703, and some tour buses.
  • There are bollards along the side of the right hand pavement at this point (photograph 7).
  • Bollard height is 71cm.
  • The gap between bollards is 200cm.
  • After passing the Theatre Royal, Thames Street curves towards the left.
  • There is a slight downward slope on the curve, then the pavement becomes level again.
  • The surface is paving slabs and brick.
  • The pavement on both sides widens at the junction wtih Datchet Road (photograph 12).
  • There are bollards at the kerb on the left hand pavement.
  • Bollard height is 94cm.
  • The gap between bollards is 120cm.
  • On the right hand pavement is the King George V Memorial Fountain, along with some bench seating (photographs 13 and 14).
  • At the crossing, there is a railing around the right hand pavement.
  • The railing height is 106cm.

Datchet Road Crossing to Eton Walkway

  • The distance from the Datchet Road crossing to the Eton Walkway is approximately 90m.
  • There are crossings on both sides of Thames Street.
  • Photographs 2, 3 and 4 show the crossing on the left hand pavement of Thames Street.
  • This crossings have dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
  • The pedestrian crossings are push button controlled with visual signals.
  • There are no audible signals at the pedestrian crossing, but both crossing points have a rotating cone for visually impaired users.
  • Photographs 5 and 6 shows the crossing on the right hand pavement.
  • After crossing, continue onto the pedestrianised section of Thames Street.
  • There is a slight downward slope.
  • The surface here is block paving and brick.
  • There are tables and chairs outside the Bel & Dragon.
  • Ahead, there are bollards dividing the paving slab pavements from the brick road (see photograph 10).
  • Bollards have a good contrast with the ground.
  • Bollard height is 105cm.
  • The gap between bollards is 200cm.
  • There is some bench seating and trees to the right (photograph 11) and in the centre as Thames Street approaches the Eton Walkway (photograph 12).
  • As Thames Street approaches the Eton Walkway, it slopes steeply upwards.

The Eton Walkway

  • The Eton Walkway is approximately 60m long.
  • The pavement surface is block paving.
  • The bridge curves over the river, giving it a steep slope up then down.
  • There are railings along both sides of the walkway.
  • There is some bench seating in the centre of the walkway (photograph 4).
  • There are bollards at the ends of the walkway.
  • At the Windsor end (photograph 2), the bollard height is 88cm.
  • The gap between bollards is 175cm.
  • These bollards have a good contrast with the ground.
  • At the Eton end (photograph 6), the bollard height is 84cm.
  • The gap between bollards is 104cm.
  • These bollards are metallic, and do not have a good contrast with the ground.
