Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the grounds include This guide is based in Newmarket Town Centre and covers the main town centre area from the railway station and passing the National Horse Racing Museum.
    This guide runs from Newmarket Train Station on Green Road towards the town centre via The Avenue and then and runs along the High Street towards the Queen Victoria Jubilee Clock/A142 Fordham Road Roundabout with a branch off towards the National Horse Racing Museum.
    The route is 0.9 miles in length (1448metres) and would take roughly 22 to 24 minutes to walk on average.
    There are some slight and steep slopes along the route.
    Pathway surfaces are concrete paving slabs, block paving and tarmac.
    The pathways have some uneven sections, which include some raised manhole covers.
    The road surfaces are tarmac, with dropped kerbs and tactile paving at most crossing points.
    There are opportunities to sit and rest.

Getting Here

  • By Car
  • The A14 is approximately 1.6 miles away from the Queen Victoria Jubilee Clock and the far east of the route via A142 Fordham Road, with direct links to the A11, M11, Norwich, Ipswich and Cambridge.

  • Parking
  • There is limited street Blue Badge parking and standard parking available on most roads on the route. There are several public car parks are also available along the route.

  • By Bus
  • There are several bus stops along most of the route with direct services available to Ipswich, Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds.

  • By Train
  • Newmarket Station is located on Green Road, approximately 0.3 miles from Newmarket High Street.
  • There is step-free access to all platforms at this station.

  • There is no charge for these parking bays.
  • Parking is limited to between 60 minutes for non-Blue Badge holders depending on the parking area.
  • Blue Badge holders may park in any of the bays for a maximum of 2 hours.

Junction – Newmarket Railway Station and Green Road

  • This is where the exit from the Railway Station meets Green Road.
  • There is a crossing point here to cross Green Road.
  • This crossing point has dropped kerbs but no tactile paving.
  • The pathways are tarmac and concrete.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The pathways are fairly narrow and are uneven in places.
  • There is a slight downhill slope leading from the Railway Station into Green Road.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as railings, bus stops, bins and signboards.

Newmarket Railway Station to the Avenue via Green Road

  • The road is a two-way road.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The pathways in this section are formed of tarmac and concrete.
  • The pathways on both sides are narrow in places.
  • There is a slight downhill slope running from Newmarket Railway Station along Green Road towards the Avenue.

Green Road to (A1304) High Street via The Avenue

  • The road is a two-way road.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The pathways in this section are formed of tarmac and concrete.
  • The pathways on both sides are narrow in places.
  • There is a slight uphill slope running along the Avenue as you exit Green Road from right to left.
  • There are some uneven areas on the pathways throughout this section.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as, railings, trees, lamp posts, bus stops, bins and signboards.
  • There are some side roads and entrances to cross along this section, most have dropped kerbs, but most don’t have tactile paving.

Junction – The Avenue and (A1304) High Street

  • There are several pedestrian crossings at this junction to cross the Avenue and High Street.
  • The pedestrian crossings have dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides, along with a flashing lower push button and audible alert.
  • The pathways are tarmac and concrete.
  • The pathways are narrow at this junction.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The pathways are uneven in places.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as, railings, bollards, cycle racks, bus stops, bins and signboards.
  • There is a slight downhill slope leading from the High Street into the Avenue.
  • There is a slight to steep downhill slope running along the High Street as you exit the Avenue from right to left.

The Avenue to Palace Street via High Street

  • The road is a two-way road.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The pathways in this section are formed of tarmac/block paving and concrete slabs.
  • The pathways on both sides are narrow in places.
  • There is a slight downhill slope running along the High Street as you exit the Avenue into the High Street. This then becomes an steep uphill slope close to Kingston Passage.
  • There are some uneven areas on the pathways throughout this section.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as railings, cycle racks, bus stops, bins and signboards.
  • There are some side roads and entrances to cross along this section, most have dropped kerbs, but most do not have tactile paving.
  • There are several pedestrian crossings to cross the High Street along the route.
  • These crossing are by the White Hart Hotel, Café Nero and also near Greggs the Bakers.
  • There are opportunities to sit and rest throughout.

Junction – Palace Street and High Street

  • There is a pedestrian crossing at this junction to cross the High Street.
  • The pedestrian crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides, along with a flashing lower push button and audible alert.
  • The pathways are tarmac, concrete and block paving.
  • The pathways are narrow at this junction.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The pathways are uneven in places.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as railings, bollards, cycle racks, bus stops, bins and signboards.
  • There is a slight uphill slope leading from the High Street into Palace Street.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope running along the High Street as you exit Palace Street from right to left.
  • There is a steep slope without handrails or 3 medium steps after the level crossing to enter Palace Street from the High Street.

High Street to Horse Racing Museum via Palace Street

  • The road is one way road with traffic travelling into Palace Street from the High Street only.
