Overview

  • About View
    • Foster Court is a long building arranged alongside Malet Place in 2 sections called the South End and the North End.
      The South End has 5 floors including a basement.
      The North End has 4 floors.
      The South End is nearest the Gower Street entrance to Malet Place.
      There is not through step-free access between the South End and North End on the ground floor. There is through step-free access between the South End and North End from the first floor upwards.
    • The 2 lifts in the building are both in the South End.
      The main lift serving the ground to third floors is for access between the South End and the North End on these floors, with a secondary lift in the South End serving the ground floor and the basement in the South End.
      There are no lifts between floors in the North End.
    • The floors are signed as Basement, Ground Floor, First Floor, Second Floor and Third Floor.
      This is a little different in the lifts which are marked as B, G, 1, 2, and 3.
    • There are internal entrances from the adjacent 1-4 Malet Place on the ground, first and second floors, and from the Jill Dando Institute Research Laboratory on the basement floor of 1-4 Malet Place.

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free via slight slopes.
  • There are some uneven surfaces along approach routes.
  • The step-free approach is via Malet Place, the main walkway into the campus off Gower Street.
  • Foster Court has five entrances, three of which are automatically operated by key card.
    The Foster Quad and South End accessible entrances have key card activated automatic double doors.
    The Foster Quad North accessible entrance has a key card activated automatic single door.
    The Foster Quad and North End stepped entrances have key card released manual double doors.
  • The Foster Quad entrances are not named or signed. The South End accessible entrance is signed 'South End'. The North End entrance is signed 'FOSTER COURT'. .
  • The Foster Quad accessible entrance provides step-free level access to the main lift lobby for access to the first floor upwards.
    The Foster Quad North accessible entrance provides step-free level access via lift to the North End ground floor.
    The South End accessible entrance provides step-free level access to the South End ground floor and via lift to the basement.
  • The Foster Quad stepped entrance provides stepped access to the first floor upwards.
    The North End stepped entrance provides stepped access to the North End ground floor, and stepped access to the first floor upwards. .
  • There are internal entrances from 1-4 Malet Place on the ground, first and second floors.
    These entrances have manual, heavy, single width doors which open towards you.
    The width of these door openings is approximately 93cm.
    There are short slopes with a slight gradient at the threshold of these entrances on the first and second floors.

Getting Around

  • There is not step-free access to all floors from within the building.
    There is step-free access to the ground floor and the basement within the South End of the building.
    There is not step-free access between ground floor circulation routes and the first floor within the South End of the building.
    There is step-free access on the ground floor within the North End of the building. There is not step-free access between ground floor circulation routes and the first floor within the North End of the building. There is step-free access between the South End and North End of the building from the first floor upwards.
  • There are five steps after the Foster Quad accessible entrance to access the South End ground floor.
    There are five steps after the Foster Quad North accessible entrance to access the North End ground floor.
    There is a platform lift available after the Foster Quad North accessible entrance to overcome these steps.
  • There are multiple trip hazards near the South End lift on the basement level due to floor level structures.
    There is a long slope with a steep gradient in the South End of the building between the basement lift lobby and the Jill Dando Institute Research Laboratory on the basement floor.
    There is a short slope with a slight gradient between the bottom of the stairs after the Foster Quad accessible entrance and the rest of the basement floor.
    There is a short ramp with a very easy gradient along the North End corridor on the first floor outside rooms 114 and 122.
  • A key card is required for access to the North End ground floor from the North End stepped entrance.
    A key card is required for access to the corridor for North End rooms 351 to 362 on the third floor.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.

    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.

Entrance (South End - Accessible)

  • This entrance is located off Malet Place, next to 1-4 Malet Place, opposite the Institute of Making.

  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access via lift at the entrance.
  • The lift bypasses the steps.
  • The slope has a steep gradient.
  • There are 7 steps with handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The steps are unmarked.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 15cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • There is a platform lift available to overcome these steps.

  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and uneven surfaces.
  • The lift door has a medium visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 97cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 104cm (width) x 142cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have a high visual contrast.
  • All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The button needs to be pressed constantly when in use.
  • Internally the lift has: a separate door to exit.
  • This lift can be used to overcome the external steps at South End entrance. The lift doors are manually operated.

Lift (South End - Ground to Basement - Internal)

  • The first, second and third floors can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked .
  • The handrails do not cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.
  • There are single and double manual doors to access the stairwell from the first floor upwards.
    There is a handrail that is easy to grip on both sides and in the centre from the entrance to the first floor.
    There is a handrail on the right-hand side going up from the first floor upwards.
    The handrail from the first floor to the second floor is not easy to grip. There is a flight of steps between the second floor and third floor without any handrails.

  • Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.

  • Seating available in the room includes: chairs with and without armrests, height adjustable chairs, sofas, and high stools.
  • Furniture available in the room includes: tables, desks, and coffee tables.
