Overview

Getting Inside

  • There are uneven surfaces leading to the entrance.
  • There are 2 entrances into the building both of which consists of 2 sets of double manual doors.
  • One entrance is signed as the Austin Building North Entrance.
    The other entrance which is shared with the Cockcroft Building is signed only with directional signage for services situated within the Cockcroft Building.

Getting Around

  • There is level access throughout the basement, ground, first, second and third floors.
    There is no step-free access to the fourth floor.
  • The fourth floor is not accessed via lift and instead can only be accessed via stairs.
  • Floor surfaces vary along all circulation routes, some of which have a shiny finish.
  • There is limited seating in the lobby and circulation areas of the building.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

    • The nearest adapted toilets are situated in either the Cockcroft Building or the Student Services Building.
    • The male toilet facilities are located in the shared stairwell with the Cockcroft Building on the first, second, and fourth floors and in the right staircase stairwell on the fourth floor.
    • The female toilet facilities are located in the shared stairwell with the Cockcroft Building on the first, second, and fourth floors.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • Standard shower facilities are located in the shared stairwell with the Cockcroft Building on the fourth floor.

Entrance (Austin Building / Cockcroft Building Shared Entrance)

  • This entrance is located at the link between the Austin and Cockcroft Buildings.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The door has a locked extension leaf.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 100cm.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is a second set of double manual doors, however one door is locked.
  • The second set of doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 81cm.
  • The second set of doors have a high visual contrast.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located towards the right of the building.
  • The distance from the Austin Building North Entrance is 8m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • The ground, first, second and third floors are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a low visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 90cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 130cm (width) x 173cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have a high visual contrast.
  • Some of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • Internally the lift has: a visual floor indicator and a list of floor services/facilities.

Stairs (Austin Building / Cockcroft Building - Shared Staircase)

  • The stairs surveyed are located in the stairwell between Cockcroft and the Austin Building.
  • Basement floor (Austin), ground floor (Austin and Cockcroft), first floor (Cockcroft), first floor (Austin) , second floor (Cockcroft), second floor (Austin), Third Floor (Cockcroft), third floor (Austin), fourth floor (Cockcroft) and fourth floor (Austin) can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail extends horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
