Access Guide
Access To
- The library is located on the ground and basement floors of 1-5 Scroope Terrace.
- The main library entrance is located along the 1-5 Scroope Terrace ground floor corridor.

- The most accessible route has step-free level access and narrow walkways.
- There is written text signage on or near the entrance.
- There is step-free level access into the library on the ground floor.
- There are double manual doors which open away from you.
- One of the doors was locked at the time of the survey.
- The width of the opening is 55cm.
- The doors have a high visual contrast.
- The locked door can be opened by a member of staff to create an entrance width of 110cm.
There is a set of security barriers at the main library entrance after the entrance doors that have a larger width then the entrance.
Reception
- The reception is located to your right on entrance.
- The distance from the ground floor library entrance is 8m.
- The most accessible route to reception has narrow walkways.
- There is step-free level access to reception.
- The height of the reception desk is 76cm.
- The reception has glazed screens and patterned/distracting backgrounds.
- There is not a hearing assistance system.
- There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
Library
- There is step-free level access throughout the majority of areas, this may include the use of a lift.
- The following areas have step-free access via ramps or slopes: the moveable shelves are accessed by small ramps on the basement floor.
- The following areas have stepped access: the lower part of the library basement floor containing teaching materials and books numbered 10 - 80 is accessed by a single step.
- Access throughout the library may include narrow walkways and narrow openings.
- There is some room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
- There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
- Some flooring is patterned.
- The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
- Seating available in the library includes: chairs with armrests, chairs without armrests, armchairs and riser recliner chairs.
- Furniture available in the library includes: tables, coffee tables, desks and height adjustable desks.
- Some tables are fixed.
- Some surface heights are suitable for wheelchair users.
- The clear underside space of some surfaces is suitable for wheelchair users.
- Lighting levels vary due to the size of the space.
- Access to the basement floor is via the 1-5 Scroope Terrace main lift and a separate basement level entrance.
A member of staff will be required to unlock the basement floor entrance. - There is not a hearing assistance system.
- The height of the touchscreen display ranges from 112cm to 136cm from the floor.

Stairs
- The stairs surveyed are located to your right on entering the library on the ground floor.
- The basement and the ground floor can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 15 steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 19cm.
- The steps have open risers.
- Lighting levels were low at the time of the survey.
- The depth of the steps varies due to the design of the spiral staircase with the steps being deeper further from the centre of the staircase.
