Access To

  • The library is located on the ground and basement floors of 1-5 Scroope Terrace.
  • The main library entrance is located along the 1-5 Scroope Terrace ground floor corridor.
    There is a separate entrance to access the basement floor of the library step-free. This is kept locked and requires a member of staff to provide access.

  • The most accessible route has step-free level access and narrow walkways.
  • There is written text signage on or near the entrance.

    There is a set of security barriers at the main library entrance after the entrance doors that have a larger width then the entrance.

Reception

  • The reception is located to your right on entrance.
  • The distance from the ground floor library entrance is 8m.
  • The most accessible route to reception has narrow walkways.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 76cm.
  • The reception has glazed screens and patterned/distracting backgrounds.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.

Library

  • There is step-free level access throughout the majority of areas, this may include the use of a lift.
  • The following areas have step-free access via ramps or slopes: the moveable shelves are accessed by small ramps on the basement floor.
  • The following areas have stepped access: the lower part of the library basement floor containing teaching materials and books numbered 10 - 80 is accessed by a single step.
  • Access throughout the library may include narrow walkways and narrow openings.
  • There is some room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • Some flooring is patterned.
  • The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
  • Seating available in the library includes: chairs with armrests, chairs without armrests, armchairs and riser recliner chairs.
  • Furniture available in the library includes: tables, coffee tables, desks and height adjustable desks.
  • Some tables are fixed.
  • Some surface heights are suitable for wheelchair users.
  • The clear underside space of some surfaces is suitable for wheelchair users.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the size of the space.
  • Access to the basement floor is via the 1-5 Scroope Terrace main lift and a separate basement level entrance.
    A member of staff will be required to unlock the basement floor entrance.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located to your right on entering the library on the ground floor.
  • The basement and the ground floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 15 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 19cm.
  • The steps have open risers.
  • Lighting levels were low at the time of the survey.
  • The depth of the steps varies due to the design of the spiral staircase with the steps being deeper further from the centre of the staircase.
