- The Baker Building is a very large building with 7 floors.
- There are 3 lifts and 4 main staircases within the building.
- The floors are signed as basement, ground, Office, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
- There is a link going through room BN1 into the Inglis Building and Inglis Building A with a stepped level change which can be overcome via a platform lift.
There is a link in the Engineering Library on the first floor into the Inglis Building and Inglis Building A which has a ramped and stepped level change. The stepped part of the level change can be bypassed by a platform lift.
There are links between the Hames Dyson Building and the Baker Building on the ground floor, first floor, second floor and third floor.

Getting Inside
- The approach to the main entrance is level.
- There is a level approach to the main entrance from the car park area in front of the building.
The rear central staircase is accessed off the road to the rear of the building as is the rear left lift external entrance. - The main entrance has level access and a set of double automatic doors that open towards you at the entrance, which lead into the main reception area on the ground floor.
The rear entrance is ramped and leads into the main reception area on the ground floor. - The main entrance is signed as both reception and Department of Engineering.
The other external entrances into the building are not signed. - The rear left lift provides the only step-free access to the ground floor areas to the rear left of the building.
- The rear entrance and the rear right corridor lift external access are accessed by slight slopes.
There is a steep ramp leading to the rear central staircase entrance.
The rear left lift external access has a steep slope to access it. - There is a stepped entrance link from the Inglis Building and Inglis Building A via room BN1. There is a stepped level change which can be bypassed by a lift.
There are links between the James Dyson Building and the Baker Building on the ground, office, first, second and third floors. These links consist of single manual doors. The ground floor link accesses the building at the bottom of a staircase and does not provide level access.
Getting Around
- There is step-free level access throughout the majority of the building.
- There is a slight slope on the corridor leading to BC0-02, BC0-03 and BC0-04.
There are two deep steps leading to a rear workshop area on the first floor.
There is a steep slope overcoming three 15cm steps to access rooms BNO-01 to BNO-42 on the office floor.
There is a slight slope to access rooms BE4-55 to BE4-58 on the fourth floor.
There is a steep slope to access The Fallside Laboratory on the fourth floor. - The central staircase areas of floors 2 and 3 are not level with rest of floors 2 and 3. Access to them is either via the central staircase or off the second floor corridor.
Off the second floor corridor there is a set of five 16cm steps to access room BC2-01 to BC2-15 with a handrail on the left on the second floor.
Off the second floor corridor there is a set of twelve 16cm steps to access room BC3-01 to BC3-15 with a handrail on the left on the second floor. - There is a staircase located to the rear left of the building on the third floor which accesses an area of the fourth floor to which there is no step-free access.
There is no step-free access to the fifth floor, this can only be accessed by a small set of steps located to the right of the building on the fourth floor.
. - Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
- There are resting areas in some of the circulation routes.
- Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building. Maps are available in some locations.
- There are manual doors located in the circulation corridors.
There is a quiet room located near to the reception on the ground floor.

- There are 3 toilets with adaptations.
- Toilets with adaptations are located on the basement floor, on the ground floor near the reception, and the first floor towards the right of the building.
- The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
- The male toilet facilities are located on the basement, second floors and fourth floors as well as on the third floor of the central staircase.
- The female toilet facilities are located on the basement, first, second and fourth floors as on the second floor of the central staircase.
- The shared toilet facilities are located on the first floor.

- The car park is located in front of Baker Building and around the side and rear of Inglis Building and Inglis Building A.
- The car park is open air/surface.

- The surveyed Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 250cm (width) x 475cm (depth).

Lift (Rear Left Lift with external access)
- The lift surveyed is located to the rear left of the building on the street behind the Baker Building.
- The basement, street, ground, first, second and third floors are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a medium visual contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The external lift control buttons have tactile markings.
- The lift door opening width is 200cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 260cm (width) x 245cm (depth).
- The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
- All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- Internally the lift has: a separate door to exit, a visual floor indicator and an audible announcer.

Entrance (Main Entrance)

Reception (Engineering Reception)
- The reception is located to your left after entering via the main entrance.
- The distance from main entrance is 3m.
- There is step-free level access to reception.
- The height of the reception desk is 92cm.
- There is not a lowered section at the desk.
- The reception has glazed screens.
- There is a clearly signed portable hearing assistance system.
- The height of the touchscreen display ranges from 95cm to 110cm from the floor.
- There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
- The flooring is shiny.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
- There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).

Lift
- The lift surveyed is located to your right on entrance.
- The distance from the main entrance is 10m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has a lift and step-free level access.
- Basement floor, Ground floor, Office Floor, First Floor, Second Floor are accessed by this lift.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).

Stairs
- The stairs surveyed are located to your right on entrance.
- The basement, ground, office, first, second, third and fourth floors can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 18 steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
- The steps have tactile markings at the top and bottom.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the step is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 17cm.
- The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
