Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free via slight slopes.
  • Kettle's Yard has 2 entrances. The main entrance is step-free access with some uneven surfaces and the House entrance is stepped access. The doors at the main entrance are automatic and the doors at the House entrance are manual.
  • The main entrance is signed as Gallery, Shop & Café. The house entrance is signed as House.
  • The main entrance provides step-free access to the reception on the ground floor.
  • The House entrance is stepped access.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free access throughout the Gallery area of the building but there is stepped access to part of the House area on the ground floor and all of the first floor.
  • There are 4 clearly marked steps with handrails on both sides to access the Galleries and Education Wing from the main entrance.
    Alternatively, there is a steep ramp with handrails on both sides to overcome these steps.
  • There are 3 steps that are not clearly marked without handrails on the ground floor of the House area.
    Alternatively, there is a steep ramp to overcome these steps.
  • Access to the first floor of the House area is via the stairs at the front or rear of the House.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth with some having a shiny finish. There are areas on the first floor of the House area that are carpeted.
  • There are resting areas in both areas of the building with a mixture of seating.
  • There is wall mounted wayfinding signage in the Gallery area of the building.
  • There is a manual door to exit the House area of the building which has a width of 99cm and the height of the button to exit is 116cm.
    This door can also be used as an entrance for a wheelchair user to access part of the ground floor of the House area.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

    • There are 3 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on level -1, 0 and 1.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • Ambulant toilet facilities are located on level 0 and level 1.
    • The shared toilet facilities are located on level 0 and on level 1.
  • Changing Places and Changing Facilities View
    • Parent and baby changing facilities are located within the toilet with adaptations located on level -1.

Reception

  • The reception is located ahead from the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 5m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 110cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 77cm.
  • There is a clearly signed portable hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested, however it was not working at the time of the survey.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.

Counter (Shop)

  • The counter is located ahead from the main entrance.

Lift (Gallery)

  • The lift surveyed is located to the left from the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 23m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has steep ramps or slopes.
  • -1, 0, 1 and 2 floors are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a medium visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 90cm.
