- Elm Grove Hall is located centrally within the Digby Stuart College campus between the Sir David Bell building and Lee House, close to the Stuart Lodge Gate and the Library.
- Elm Grove Hall is comprised of 4 conjoined accommodation blocks arranged around 2 courtyards.
- The courtyards are named North Court for a lower courtyard, and South Court for an elevated upper courtyard.
- This guide will refer to 'lower courtyard' and 'upper courtyard' for purposes of access.
- Elm Grove Hall is further conjoined to the Elm Grove Conference Centre at the north end of the lower courtyard.
- The accommodation blocks as viewed from the Elm Grove Conference Centre, are named J Block and K Block to the left of the building, and M Block and N Block to the right of the building.
- J Block and N Block are arranged over 6 floors, from the ground floor to the fifth floor.
- K Block and M Block are arranged over 5 floors, from the first floor to the fifth floor.
- The establishment provides 358 rooms with ensuite facilities.
- The establishment provides 12 bedrooms with adaptations with ensuite facilities with adaptations.
- There is step-free level access via lift to flats with bedrooms with adaptations.
- There are key card operated automatic doors into some flats with bedrooms with adaptations, for example into Flats J11 and N12.

Getting Inside
- There are 2 step-free approaches to Elm Grove Hall from other areas of campus:
- There is a slope with a very easy gradient when approaching Elm Grove Hall from the north side of the Elm Grove building, near the Library.
- This approach is for access to the lower courtyard.
- Further access to the lower courtyard is step-free and level through a covered walkway.
- The lower courtyard is for step-free access to J Block and N Block only.
- There is a long slope with a slight gradient when approaching Elm Grove Hall from the pedestrian walkway opposite the Sir David Bell building.
- This approach is for access to the upper courtyard.
- Further access to the upper courtyard is via a slope with a very easy gradient through a covered walkway.
- The upper courtyard is for step-free access to all blocks.
- There is a slope with a very easy gradient when approaching Elm Grove Hall from the north side of the Elm Grove building, near the Library.
- Access to entrances within both the lower and upper courtyards is via slopes with a very easy gradient.
- There are more than 20 medium height unmarked steps with handrails on both sides between the lower and upper courtyard.
- These steps can be overcome by lifts within either of J Block or N Block.
- There are 6 entrances into Elm Grove Hall.
- There are 2 entrances into each of J Block and N Block, one each from the lower courtyard, and one each from the upper courtyard.
- There is a single entrance into each of L Block and M Block from the upper courtyard.
- Lower courtyard entrances provide access to the ground floor.

- There is an internal entrance into N Block from Elm Grove P Block on the ground floor. There is only stepped access at this entrance.
- There are further internal entrances into J and N Blocks from Elm Grove H and P Blocks on the first to third floors. There is a slope with a slight gradient before these entrances on the third floor.
- A key card is required for access at these entrances.
Getting Around
- There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
- Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny or patterned finish.
- There is no seating available in circulation areas.
- Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
- There are manual doors for access to all flats, with the exception of flats J11 and N12 which have key card operated power assisted doors.
- There are manual doors along corridors in flats J11, J21, and J31; and N01, N12, N23 and N33.
- There are also manual doors between:
- J Block and N Block on the second to fourth floors;
- J Block and K Block on the first to fifth floors;
- K Block and M Block on the first to fifth floors;
- M Block and N Block on the second to fifth floors.
- These doors require a key card for access.

- Toilets with adaptations are located within the upper courtyard entrance lobbies of each of J, K, L, and M Blocks.
- The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
- The toilets with adaptations in J Block and M Block have a transfer space on the left-hand side.
- The toilets with adaptations in K Block and N Block have a transfer space on the right-hand side.
Entrance (J Block - Lower Courtyard)
- This entrance is located to the far left of the lower courtyard as viewed from the Elm Grove building.
- The entrance area is not clearly signed.
- There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
- There is step-free access via a very easy slope at the entrance.
- There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 110cm.
- There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
- The door has a locked extension leaf.
- The door opens towards you.
- The width of the opening is 101cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The door has a low visual contrast.
- There is step-free level access as you enter.
Lift (J Block)
- The lift surveyed is located straight ahead after the lower courtyard entrance to J Block.
- The distance from entrance is 9m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
- The ground floor to the fifth floor are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a high visual contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The weight limit for the lift is 630kg.
- The external lift control buttons have a high visual contrast.
- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift door opening width is 99cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 106cm (width) x 140cm (depth).
- The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a high visual contrast.

- The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
