Access Guide
COVID-19 Information
- The information in this section was taken in October 2020.
- UAL is regularly reviewing all access to buildings and facilities in response to the latest government guidance. Check the updates on the Coronavirus: Important Information page to find out more.
- There have been no changes to the external access.
- Hand sanitizing stations have been installed in high use areas, at entrances, exits, within lift lobbies and along corridors by all stairwells on all floors.
- There is a limited number of people allowed within the canteen areas, cafes, kitchens, toilets and shops.
- Currently all routes are two way, with additional signage to advise "keep left" and 'keep your distance'.
- Floor and wall markings are in place to advise of social distancing measures.
- Protective screens have been installed at the main reception and gatehouse desks.
- There are reduced numbers permitted within toilets, this is displayed on the door to the facility. Some urinals and cubicles may be closed to allow for social distancing.
- Shower facilities are single use only.
- PPE, facial masks, hand sanitiser and gloves are all available from main reception if required.

- To access Millbank you will need to enter Chelsea Block A,B,C via the Main Atterbury Street Entrance.
- It will lead to the lower ground floor of the building.
- For step free access you will need to take the Block C lift to levels G or 1 then cross over to A Block by going through B Block.
- On the ground floor there is an easy ramp from blocks C to B and on the first floor an easy ramp from blocks B to A.
- Then take the A Block lift to levels lower ground, upper ground, 2 or 3, which will provide level access to Millbank.

Leave Pimlico via Bessborough Street North Entance
- Bessborough Street's surface is slightly uneven block paving.
- There is a long slight gradient going towards the road downhill along the road here.
Turn left down Drummond Gate
- The surface is slightly uneven block paving.
- There is an easy gradient going downhill.
- There are two service roads, both with cobbled dropped kerbs on either side.
- Or alternatively take the pavement to your left it has a width of 90cm.
- There is a patch of tarmac next to a tree near the Vauxhall Bridge Road Pedestrian Lights.
Cross at Vauxhall Bridge Road Pedestrian Crossing
- Use the pedestrian crossing to reach the road.
- There are two islands.
- Both sides of the first island have tactile dropped kerbs.
- The surface of the first island is cobbled and tactile paving.
- The second island is at road height and has a surface of tarmac and manhole covers.
- Cross from the island to the other side of the street which has a tactile paved dropped kerb.
Bus Stop Pimlico Station
- The bus stop is to the left of the traffic lights just used.
- It has a shelter, seating and an electronic departures board.
- It serves routes 2, 36, 185, 436, N2 and N136.
Turn right up Vauxhall Bridge Road to John Islip Street
- The surface is slightly uneven block paving.
- There is an easy ramp uphill and a gentle one towards the road.
- There is a covered area up the road when you reach the Lithuanian Embassy.
Turn left at John Islip Street
- The road is slightly uneven block paving.
- There is a slight gradient going towards the road.
Bus Stop Ponsonby Terrace
- This stop serves routes 88 and C10.
Cross John Islip Street just before you reach Ponsonby Place
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on either side of the road.
- There is a tactile paved island in the middle of the road.
Turn left and cross Ponsonby Place
- Turn left.
- The surface is slightly uneven block paving.
- In about 5m you will find the dropped kerb to take you across Ponsonby Place.
- It is concrete and there is another on the other side. The road is tarmac.
Head up John Islip Street
- There surface is slightly uneven block paving.
- There is a slight gradient going downhill and a slight gradient towards the road.
- There is a bus stop on your left.
- Shortly after this, you will come across The John Islip Street entrance to the campus.
Bus stop Chelsea College of Art & Design
- There is a bus stop here that is sheltered and has seating.
- It serves routes 88 and C10.
Chelsea College John Islip Street Entrance
- On your right you will see one entrance to Chelsea College.
- Through the first gate is an easy ramp that leads to the Chelsea Place Cafe, Chelsea Place Gallery and the Gatehouse Site Office.
- There is then a service road with cobbled dropped kerbs on either side.
- If you go up the road here you will find the entrance to the Chelsea Cafe, Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground and from that is the entrance to Block E.
- Blocks A, B, C, Block D, The Triangle Building and the Laser Design Studio can be reached through here but the route contains a steep ramp.
- If you continue up John Islip Street on the other side of the ramp is the John Islip Sreet Entrance to Block E.
Continue up John Islip Street
- The surface is slightly uneven block paving.
- To your right as you proceed there is an entrance into the Stuart Hall Library within E Block. (Photograph 2).
- There is a slight gradient going downhill and another down to the road.
- There are several cobbled sections next to trees.
Turn right and go up Atterbury Street to the Main Entrance
- The urface is slightly uneven block paving.
- There is a slight gradient going downhill and another down to the road.
- There are several concrete sections next to trees.
- On your right you will find the entrance to the Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground.
Arrive at Chelsea College Main Reception Entrance
- You will come across the entrance.
- At the entrance there is a cobbled dropped kerb leading to a cobbled service road.
- This leads to the block paved main entrance ramp on your right.
