Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the entrance (library café - external) is step-free and level.
  • Access from Central Car Park 2.4 to the entrance (library café - external) is via a lift and a slight ramp.
    Access from Car Park North 3.1 to the entrance (library café - external) is via a platform lift and steep ramps.
  • LMO, LFA, LBK and LBU - University Library and Borthwick Institute for Archives - Library Café has two entrances. Both entrances provide step-free level access into the Library Café. There are push-pad activated, double automatic doors at the library café external entrance. There are double automatic doors at the library café internal entrance.
  • The library café external entrance is signed as "Library Café". The library café internal entrance is signed as "LMO/025 - Library Café".
  • The library café external entrance provides step-free level access into the Library Café.
  • The library café internal entrance provides step-free level access into the Library Café.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the area.
  • Floor surfaces are comprised of a mixture of shiny vinyl.
  • A mixture of seating is provided throughout the café.
  • Signage indicating where to order and collect your food is provided throughout the café.
  • There are not manual doors in the area.

Entrance (Library Café - External)

  • This entrance is located to the left as you approach the library building from the bridge over University Road.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 103cm.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 167cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 103cm.
  • This entrance is often not in use on cold or especially windy days. .
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Entrance (Library Café - Internal)

  • This entrance is located immediately to the left as you enter the library through the main entrance, before the security barriers.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 170cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Eating and Drinking (Library Café)

  • Location and Access View
    • The Library Café is located immediately ahead of you as you enter through either of the Library Café entrances.
    • The most accessible route has step-free level access.
    • There is step-free level access into this area.
  • Service View
    • This area has a counter where food and drink can be ordered, staff who can provide assistance with ordering and numerous seating options.
    • Full table service is available on request only.
    • Menus are wall-mounted, digital, online, displayed on the counter and available in large print.
    • The following dietary requirements can be catered for: gluten free, dairy free, lactose free, nut allergy, vegetarian and vegan.
    • The following are available: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups and takeaway cutlery.
    • There is a clearly signed fixed hearing assistance system.
    • The hearing assistance system could not be tested at the time of the survey.
  • Order and Payment View
    • The payment counter was surveyed.
    • The counter is located straight ahead as you enter through the internal entrance.
    • There is step-free level access to the counter.
    • The height of the counter is 86cm.
    • There is not a lowered section at the counter.
    • The height of the touchscreen display ranges from 100cm to 144cm from the floor.
    • When made accessible the height of the touchscreen display ranges from 100cm to 120cm from the floor.
    • There is a separate collection counter. This is at a height of 86cm.
  • Seating Area View
    • There is step-free level access throughout the seating area.
    • There is some room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
    • There is space for an assistance dog to rest.
    • Some flooring is shiny and patterned.
    • The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
    • Seating available in this area includes: chairs without armrests, benches and high stools.
    • Furniture available in this area includes: tables, coffee tables and high tables.
    • Some tables are fixed.
    • The surface height of some of the tables is suitable for wheelchair users.
    • The clear height under some of the tables is suitable for wheelchair users.
    • There is background noise in this area which varies depending on the time of day.
    • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
