Summary

Exit The Fountains Learning Centre And Turn Right

  • Leave the Fountains Learning Centre via the front entrance and turn right.
  • Cross the forecourt area, which has a paving slab and brick block surface, and a slight gradient downwards (photographs 2 and 3).
  • Cross the University service road using the raised speed bump, which has a brick block surface and tactile paving on either side (photographs 4 and 5).
  • Once across the service road, turn left and follow the brick block path to Clarence Street (photograph 6).

Turn Right At Clarence Street And Follow Path Until It Becomes Haxby Road

  • At the junction the path has a slight slope down, and the surface changes from brick block to tarmac. This is also some tactile paving here (photographs 1 and 2). The path continues to have a very slight gradient down.
  • After approximately 21m the surface becomes paving slabs with patches of concrete (photograph 3). This is uneven in places, and there is also a patch of tactile paving as you pass a road crossing (photograph 4 and 5).
  • After a further 47m you pass the York St John University bus stop, and the path narrows to 150cm (photographs 6 and 7).
  • Continue for approximately 44m along the slightly uneven paving slab path (photograph 8) until you reach the junction with Townend Street, where the path becomes tarmac (photograph 9).
  • Cross Townend Street. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides and a traffic island with tactile paving in the middle (photographs 10 - 13). The road has a tarmac surface with a slight slope up then down.
  • On the far side turn left. There is a gap, 105cm wide, between two poles leading back to the main road path (photograph 14). The road has now become Haxby Road.

Continue Along Haxby Road to Lowther Street

  • The path here is tarmac, with concrete areas as you pass the two entrances to the forecourt. There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving on both sides of these entrances (photographs 1 - 4).
  • You then pass a pedestrian crossing, which has a dropped kerb with tactile paving (photograph 5). The path narrows to 105cm as you pass the post with crossing button and traffic lights (photograph 6).
  • After 31m you reach the junction with Lowther Street (photograph 7). At the time of the survey, there was a temporary sign blocking the access to the crossing (photograph 8).
  • Cross Lowther Street. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides. The road is tarmac with a slight camber (photographs 9 - 11). On the far side turn right to re-join the main path, then left to continue along Haxby Road. Again, there was a temporary sign in the path at this point (photograph 12).

Continue Past The Punch Bowl Pub, Markham Crescent and Markham Street

  • The path has a tarmac surface, uneven in places (photographs 1 - 5). There is a pedestrian crossing directly in front of the Punch Bowl Pub, which has a dropped kerb with tactile paving (photograph 1). The path narrows to 140cm as you pass the post with crossing button and traffic lights (photograph 2). After approximately 58m you reach the junction with Markham Crescent.
  • Cross Markham Crescent. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving both sides, and the tarmac road has a gentle camber (photographs 6 - 8).
  • Continue along Haxby Road for 31m to the junction with Markham Street. This stretch has a tarmac surface (photograph 9), uneven in places, particularly where there are drain covers (photograph 10). There is also a dropped kerb with tactile paving about half way along this stretch (photograph 11).
  • Cross Markham Street. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides, and the tarmac road has a gentle camber (photographs 12 - 14).

Continue Along Haxby Road Past Neville Street to Stanley Street

  • The path remains as tarmac and uneven in places (photograph 1 and 4). There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving as the path crosses access to driveways (photographs 2 and 3).
  • After 45m you reach the junction with Neville Street. There are drain covers just before the crossing (photograph 5).
  • Cross Neville Street. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving both sides, and the tarmac road has a gentle camber (photographs 6 and 7).
  • Continue along Haxby Road for 40m to the junction with Stanley Street. The path here is paving slabs, so can be slightly uneven in places. There is also a patch of tactile paving as you pass a zebra crossing (photograph 8).
  • After approximately 24m there are bollards to the side of the path (photograph 9).
  • Just before the junction with Stanley Street, the surface becomes brick block paving (photograph 10).
  • Cross Stanley Street. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides, and the tarmac road has a camber up then down.

Continue to City Residence

  • After Stanley Street, the path surface is brick block paving for 4m and then becomes tarmac (photograph 1). The path drops and rises again with no tactile paving (photograph 2).
  • After 9m, the path becomes brick block paving again for 5m, up to the junction with Walpole Street outside the sandwich shop (photograph 3).
  • Cross Walpole Street. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides, and the tarmac road has a gentle camber (photographs 4 - 6).
  • On the far side, the path is brick block paving for 2m, outside the convenience store. It is then tarmac for tarmac for 18m to the road leading into the City Residence site. There is a dropped kerb without tactile paving on this stretch (photograph 7).
  • The path then rises slightly then falls as it passes the Walpole Street bus stop (photograph 8). There is a bin just past the bus stop, which narrows the path to 150cm. Just beyond this, you can turn right into the City Residence site (photograph 9).
  • Cross the City Residence entry road. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides, and the road has a tarmac surface.

Continue Past City Residence, White Cross Road and Haxby Road Primary School

  • The path here is tarmac, which is uneven in places, particularly where there are drain covers.
  • After 34m there is a telephone exchange box, which narrows the path to 110cm (photograph 2).
  • 8m beyond that the path drops then rises without tactile paving as it crosses the entrance to a driveway (photographs 3 and 4).
  • Continue 50m along the tarmac path (photographs 5 and 6). You then cross a dropped kerb with tactile paving as you pass a zebra crossing (photograph 7). 9m beyond that is the junction with White Cross Road.
  • Cross White Cross Road. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides, and the tarmac road has a gentle camber (photographs 8 - 10).
  • Continue along Haxby Road. The path has a tarmac surface with a very slight gradient up, although the area outside the convenience store just past White Cross Road has a paving slab surface.
  • After 22m the path drops then rises without tactile paving, and just beyond that there is a barrier opposite the pedestrian entrance to Haxby Road Primary School, which narrows the path to 130cm (photograph 12).
  • You then cross a vehicle entrance to the primary school, which has tactile paving on both sides (photographs 13 and 14). You then pass a crossing with tactile paving (photograph 15).
  • A further 6m on there is a telephone exchange box, which reduces the width of the path to 132cm (photograph 16).
  • After 21m you pass a bin, which narrows the path to 150cm. There is also a bus stop here, and the path is crossed by a drainage gulley (photographs 18 and 19).
  • 11m beyond the bus stop cross the entrances to the primary school car park and a business park (photograph 20). There is a dropped kerb without tactile paving either side of this area.

Continue Over The Bridge

  • The path over the bridge has a tarmac surface with a mainly slight gradient but steep in places.
  • After 17m there is a strip of corduroy tactile paving as you approach an entrance to the Orbital Route cycle path on the right. There is another strip of corduroy paving just past the entrance (photographs 2 - 4).
  • On the far side of the bridge you pass a crossing which has a dropped kerb and tactile paving. 5m beyond that there is another strip of corduroy paving (photograph 8). There is then a dip in the path as it crosses the end of Kitchener Street, and then a further strip of corduroy paving (photograph 9).
  • The path then passes a telephone exchange box, which narrows the path to 160 cm (photograph 10).
  • Continue on the path for another 24m to the junction with the hospital road.
  • Cross the hospital road. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides, and the tarmac road has a slight camber (photographs 12 - 14).

Continue Past The Hospital And Theatre

  • The path here has a tarmac surface and is uneven in places, particularly where there are drain covers.
  • 29m beyond the hospital road you pass a dropped kerb with tactile paving for a crossing (photograph 3).
  • After another 19m there is a slight slope up then down on the path (photograph 5). The path then crosses a road entrance to the theatre. There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving on either side of this (photograph 6). There is a bus stop just past this (photograph 7), and there is a slight slope down in the path as it passes the end of the bus shelter (photograph 8).
  • 16m further on you pass a crossing point with a dropped kerb and tactile paving (photograph 9). 8m past that the path drops and rises without tactile paving (photograph 10).
  • Follow the path round. past the roundabout, for another 16m.
  • Cross Hayley's Terrace just past the roundabout. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides, and also tactile paving on the traffic island in the middle.
  • The road is tarmac with a very slight slope up to the middle, and a slight slope down on the other side (photographs 12 - 16).

Continue Past The Swimming Pool

  • Once across Hayley's Terrace turn left and pass the pedestrian and cycle path to the swimming pool. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on either side of the path (photographs 1 and 2).
  • Follow the path round past the roundabout. You are now back on Haxby Road. This path is tarmac and uneven in places. It also has a slight gradient up (photographs 3 and 4).
  • Just past the roundabout you pass a crossing point with a dropped kerb and tactile paving (photograph 5). This is a similar crossing point 55m further on (photograph 8).
  • 7m beyond that crossing point, you pass the exit from the swimming pool car park. There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving on either side of the exit road (photographs 9 and 10).
  • Continue for 18m. There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving either side of a power substation (photograph 11).
  • You cross similar access roads 30 m on (photographs 12 and 13), and then another 9m on (photograph 14).
  • Continue on for 14m to the junction with Bowling Green Court (photograph 15).
  • Cross Bowling Green Court. There are dropped kerbs either side of the road with a brick block surface (not tactile). The road is tarmac with a gentle camber (photographs 16 - 18).

Continue Along Haxby Road To Sports Park Exit

  • The path here is tarmac and is uneven in places.
  • 56m on from Bowling Green Court you pass the Bowling Green bus stop (photograph 3).
  • A further 39m on you will start to pass the 100m running track on the other side of the hedge to your right (photograph 5).
  • After another 83m you reach the exit road from the Sports Park (photograph 8). Normally, pedestrians are able to turn right here to enter the Sports Park. However, at the time of the survey (October 2020), the path (and exit road) were closed due to building works (photograph 9).
  • So, now you need to cross the exit and continue along Haxby Road. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides, and the road is tarmac with a gentle camber (photographs 10 - 12).

Continue Past The Sports Park To The Entrance

  • Continue along the path for a further 86m to the entrance into the Park.
  • This path is tarmac and is uneven in places.

Turn Right Into The Sports Park And Follow The Path To The Building Entrance

  • Use the dropped kerb with tactile paving to access the road (photograph 1).
  • Turn right and follow the road into the park (photograph 2).
  • After 22m there is a speed bump in the road to negotiate (photograph 3).
  • 14m on from the speed bump you can access the path, via a dropped kerb without tactile paving (photograph 4).
  • Take this path for 85m past the 3G pitches to the front of the Sports Park building. The path is tarmac and uneven in places (photographs 5 - 9).
  • Once in front of the building, turn left and take the path for 18m to the entrance (photographs 10 - 12).
