Introduction

  • The following information describes the route along Windsor High Street from the Queen Victoria Statue (Junction with Castle Hill) southwards to where the High Street becomes Sheet Street.
  • This route is approximately 0.14 miles (220m).
  • The route takes approximately 3-5 minutes to walk.
  • The route leads you past two bus stops.
  • The surface of paths along the route consists of block paving, with cobbled sections at side roads.
  • The High Street starts level, but for most of its length is a steep slope downhill from the junction with Castle Hill.
  • The potential hazards on this route include: tables and chairs on the pavement, and uneven surfaces.
  • The guide is split into the following sections:-
  • 1. Queen Victoria Statue (Junction with Castle Hill) to Junction with Church Lane
  • 2. Junction with Church Lane to the War Memorial
  • 3. War Memorial to St Alban’s Street/Sheet Street.

Getting Here

  • Windsor High Street is approximately 7 miles from Junction 6 of the M4 via the A332, which gives you direct links to the M25, Central London, Reading, Swindon and Bristol. The High Street runs north to south through the City Centre. At the north end it becomes Thames Street (B3022). At the south end it becomes Sheet Street (B3022).
  • There is a bus stop within 150 metres of the venue.
  • Bus stops along the High Street provide direct services to Slough, Heathrow, Bracknell, Dedworth and Legoland.

  • The nearest Railway Station is Windsor & Eton Central.
  • Windsor & Eton Central is located in the Royal Windsor Station shopping area on Thames Street. There is step-free access to all platforms at this station. There is a direct train service to Slough. Windsor & Eton Riverside is located on Datchet Road, approximately 400m from the High Street. There is a service available to London Waterloo. There is step-free access to all platforms at this station.

Parking

  • The venue does not have its own car park.

    • On street Blue Badge parking is located on High Street outside Harte & Garter, and further down the hill outside Nando's.
      There is also a single Blue Badge bay on Park Street, near the junction with St Alban's Street.

    • Clearly signed and / or standard marked parking bays are available.
    • Standard marked parking bays are located on High Street and Thames Street.
  • Drop-off Point View
    • There is not a designated drop off point.
  • Comments View
    • The Blue Badge and standard parking bays range in width between 235cm - 256cm.
    • Parking payment is by smartphone app.
    • Parking may be restricted on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings due to scheduled ceremonial parades.

High Street – Queen Victoria Statue (Junction with Castle Hill) to Junction with Church Lane

  • The distance from the junction with Castle Hill to Church Lane is approximately 75m.
  • This section begins with the junction with Castle Hill / Queen Victoria statue on the left, and the Peascod Street shopping area on the right.
  • The pavement here is comprised of block paving.
  • There were ground works here at the time of survey (October 2023), with a pedestrian diversion up Castle Hill, then along the front of the shops.
  • Access along the pedestrian diversion was width restricted to 120cm at the time of survey (October 2023).
  • This section of the High Street is level near the junction with Castle Hill, and proceeds into a steep slope after the Macdonald Windsor Hotel.
  • There are bollards and street sign posts on the right hand pavement, and bins and a railing on the left hand pathway.
  • The bins and railing had been temporarily removed at the time of survey (October 2023) due to ground works.
  • There are tables and chairs on the pavement outside some venues.
  • There is a pedestrian crossing across the High Street, between Glorious Britain and A Little Present.
  • The crossing has level kerbs with tactile paving, and a raised brick surface over the road.
  • The pedestrian crossing is push button controlled with audible and visual signals.
  • There is a section of cobbled paving at the junction with Queen Charlotte Street, ahead of The Windsor Guildhall.
  • There are male standard toilets on the right hand side just before The Windsor Guildhall colonnade.
  • At The Windsor Guildhall, the path on the left hand side proceeds along the colonnade where bench seating is available.
  • At the end of the colonnade is a flight of 6 medium height stone steps with a handrail on the left hand side going down.
  • Some of the steps may be uneven due to prolonged use.
  • There are female standard toilets on the right hand side after the colonnade.
  • There is a crossing at Church Lane where there are railings and a bollard which is 76cm high.
  • The Church Lane crossing has a low kerb without tactile paving, and is cobbled with small bricks.
  • On the right hand pavement there may be tables and chairs outside the Castle Hotel.

Junction with Church Lane to the War Memorial

  • The distance from the junction with Church Lane to the War Memorial is approximately 70m.
  • The pavement on both sides of the High Street is block paving and is on a slope with a steep incline.
  • There some bollards on the left hand pavement which narrow towards sheltered bus stop 'Parish Church Stop J', served by routes 2, 8, 440, 702 and 703.
  • There is some bench seating here.
  • The right hand pavement past the Castle Hotel comprises cobbles/small bricks with a downward camber towards the road.
  • Further along, outside The Long Walk Grill and Bar, is sheltered bus stop 'Parish Church Stop A', served by routes 2, 8, 440, 702 and 703.
  • The left hand pavement passes the Windsor Parish Church of St John the Baptist, and the War Memorial.

War Memorial to St Alban’s Street/Sheet Street

  • The distance from the War Memorial to the end of the High Street is approximately 75m.
  • The pavement surface here is block paving and is on a slope with a steep incline.
  • There is an unmarked and unsignposted crossing point outside Clairmonts and Paul Alexander Kitchens with level tactile paving and raised brick surface.
  • Further downhill the pavements on both sides of the road become more narrow.
  • The right hand pavement continues right from the High Street into Sheet Street.
  • The left hand pavement opens out into a block paved area containing various memorials and historical features.
  • The paved area is uneven in places and continues away from the road on a slope with a steep incline.
  • The paved area has bench seating and various street furniture such as post boxes, a telephone kiosk, bicycle parking area, planters and rubbish bins.
  • At the junction with St Alban’s Street there are bollards, and a dropped kerb with tactile paving.
  • The bollards are 89cm high and width restricted to 120cm.
  • The bollards have good colour contrast with the ground.
