Access Guide
Introduction
- This guide describes The Queensway shopping area in Stevenage Town Centre.
- It covers the area between Tesco Extra and The Forum in the north through to the Town Square, then to Southgate and the library in the south.
- This is a distance of approximately 600m (0.4 miles) which would take 5–10 minutes to walk.
- The shopping area is all pedestrianised.
- It is mostly level or with slight slopes.
- There are some sheltered walkways on both sides throughout the town. .
- Seating is available.
- The nearest accessible and standard public toilets are in the Town Square.

Getting Here
- By Car:
- Stevenage Town Centre is approximately 2 miles northeast of Junction 7 of the A1(M), which gives you direct links to the M25, Central London, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City and the North.
- By Bus:
- The Bus Station is in between the Train Station and the Town Square, visible / accessed from Lytton Way.
- The buses which operate from here include Arriva and Centrebus.

- By Train:
- Stevenage Station is approximately 0.1 miles away from the Town Centre.
- This station is served by Great Northern, Hull Trains, LNER and Thameslink.
- There is step-free access to all platforms by lift.
- Staff are available to assist with portable ramps between the platform and the train.
- There is a pedestrian only walking route between the station and the Town Centre.

Parking
- There is ample parking around Stevenage Town Centre.
- There are free on street Blue Badge bays along Southgate and Marshgate.
- There is on street pay and display parking along Southgate and a pay and display short stay car park in The Quadrant.
- Parking is available in the Tesco Extra car park with a minimum spend of £5 instore required.

Forum Shopping Area
- The Forum shopping area is a pedestrianised walkway connecting Tesco and Queensway.
- The surface of this part of the shopping area is block paving and paving slabs.
- There are accessible telephone boxes available which are open sided and have the phone at a suitable height for wheelchair users.
- Potential hazards include advertising boards, cycle racks, tree planters and the support columns for the sheltered walkway.
- There are benches to sit and rest throughout the shopping area.
- The surface of this area is generally level with one slight slope leading down towards H.Samuel.
- This slight slope leads up towards the Westgate Shopping Centre and down towards Queensway.
- There are sheltered walkways on each side of the Forum here.
Queensway Shopping Area – The Forum to Town Square
- The surface of the pathways along Queensway are a mixture of block paving and paving slabs.
- There are sheltered walkways here.
- Potential hazards include trees, bins, cycle racks, food stalls/trucks, café seating areas and the support columns for the sheltered walkway.
- There are accessible telephone boxes available which are open sided and have the phone at a suitable height for wheelchair users.
- Queensway is generally level or with slight slopes.
- There are 2 street information signpost panels along Queensway.
Town Square Shopping Area
- The surface of the pathways here are a mixture of block paving and paving slabs.
- There are public standard female and male toilets as well as an accessible toilet and a parent and baby room beside the clock tower.
- Potential hazards in this area include cycle racks, food stalls, a flower market, lampposts, trees and planters.
- There is ample benched seating areas throughout the Town Square area.
- The Town Square area is generally level with one very slight slope.
Queensway Shopping Area – Town Square to Southgate
- The surface of the pathways here are a mixture of block paving and paving slabs.
- Potential hazards here include advertising boards, shop produce and restaurant/café seating areas.
- There are accessible telephone boxes available which are open sided and have the phone at a suitable height for wheelchair users.
- There is a steep ramp and steps that leads down towards Southgate.
- The ramp has handrails on both sides.
- There are 3 medium height steps either side of the ramp.
- The steps on the right of the ramp have a handrail on the left.
- The steps on the left of the ramp have a handrail on the right.
- Both the ramp and steps have tactile paving at the top and bottom.
Southgate
- Southgate is a pedestrianised area connecting residential flats to the town.
- The surface of the pathways here are a mixture of block paving and paving slabs.
- There is a street information signpost panel in the Southgate area.
- Potential hazards here include trees, bollards, lampposts and a CCTV post.
- There is a fenced off children’s park near to the library.
- There are free on street Blue Badge parking bays and pay and display parking outside the library.
- There is a short stay pay and display car park opposite the library in The Quadrant.
- There is benched seating throughout the Southgate area.
- The pathways here are level.
