Evacuation and Fire Safety Provisions

Overview

  • About View
    • Marshgate is a flagship building with 10 floors.
    • There are 4 main lifts and 4 main staircases within the building.
      The lifts and stairs are arranged into 'Cores' at each corner of the building.
      Core B is front-right.
      Core C is front-left.
      Core A is rear-right.
      Core D is rear-left.
      There are an additional 3 lifts serving a subset of floors from the ground floor upwards, and also to the basement level.
      There are also 2 escalators and numerous connecting staircases.
    • The floors are signed as -1, G, 1, 2, etc., for the basement, ground floor, level 1, level 2, and so on.
      This is a bit different in the lifts which are marked LG for level -1.
      Only the Core D lifts and Core D stairs serve level -1.

  • Parking and Public Transport View

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • Marshgate has three entrances.
    All entrances have two sets of automatic double doors.
    All entrances provide step-free access to the main atrium on the ground floor of the building.
  • The main and side entrances are not named or signed.
    The rear entrance is signed UCL East Marshgate.
  • The main accessible entrance at the front of the building provides step-free level access to the reception desk on the ground floor.
  • The side entrance is located in the side of the building facing Sidings Street.
    The entrance at the rear of the building is mainly used for access to the bicycle store.
    A key card is required for access at this entrance with the key card reader at a height of 94cm.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
  • There is no through access to between Core A and Core D on the ground floor, only via the main atrium.
    There is no through access to Core A from Core B or Core D on level 1.
    There is no access between Core B and Core C on level 3.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There is considerable mixture of seating available throughout the building from level 1 upwards.
  • Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There is a turnstile gate near the rear of the building on the ground floor for access to the bicycle store in the basement.
    The gates are width restricted to 65cm.
    The gates requires a key card.
    There is an alternative wider single width manual door to the left of the turnstile gates.
    A key card is required for this door.
  • There is a prayer room towards the rear of the building on level 1, off the Core A lift lobby.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 25+ toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on all levels.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • All toilets with adaptations in Core A and Core C have a transfer space on the right-hand side. All toilets with adaptations in Core B and Core D have a transfer space on the left-hand side.
    • Ambulant toilet facilities are located on all levels.
    • The gender inclusive step-free toilet facilities are located on all levels.
    • The female step-free toilet facilities are located on levels 1 to 7 near the Core B lifts, and on level -1 in the female standard changing room.
    • The male step-free toilet facilities are located levels 1 to 7 near the Core D lifts, and on level -1 in the male standard changing room.
  • Changing Places and Changing Facilities View
    • The Changing Places toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, to the rear of the building.
    • Standard changing facilities are located on level -1.
    • Parent and baby changing facilities are located on the ground floor, to the rear of the building.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • The shower facilities which have adaptations are located on level -1 near the Core D lift, and level 1 near the Core D lift.
    • Standard shower facilities are located on level -1.
    • There are ambulant shower facilities available within the female and male standard changing rooms on level -1.

Rooms and Services in the Building

Parking

  • Drop-off Point View
    • There is not a designated drop-off point available.
  • On-street Parking View
    • On-street designated Blue Badge parking is available .
    • The on-street designated Blue Badge parking bays are located on Pool Street, outside One Pool Street, opposite London Aquatics Centre.
    • The on-street Blue Badge bay markings have a low colour contrast.

Entrance (Main)

  • This entrance is located to the front of the building, facing Water Works River.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.

Reception

  • The reception is located on the right after the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 4m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 111cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 78cm.
  • The reception has patterned/distracting backgrounds.
  • There is a clearly signed portable hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • The flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
  • There are security barriers with a wider opening which are operated by key card.
  • There is a security desk on the right after the security barriers.
    The height of the security desk is 78cm.

Lift (Core B)

  • The lift surveyed is located on the right after the reception security barriers.
  • The distance from the reception security barriers is 23m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and doors permanently held open.
  • The ground floor and levels 1 to 8 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 110cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 200cm (width) x 140cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

  • The ground floor and levels 1 to 4 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 90cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 109cm (width) x 210cm (depth).

    Internally this lift has a separate door to exit.
    This lift does not have a mirror to aid reversing.

Escalators (Ground Floor to Level 2)

  • The escalators surveyed are located on the left after the reception security barriers.
  • The ground floor and level 2 are accessed by escalators.
  • The escalator steps are clearly marked.
  • The foot (bottom) and head (top) of the escalators are not clearly marked.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
  • The escalator detailed here accesses the ground to level 2 in the building.
    There is a similar escalator between level 2 and level 4 to the rear of the building, as shown in the photographs.

Stairs (Core B)

  • The stairs surveyed are located on the right after the reception security barriers.
  • There is a single manual door to access the stairwell.
  • The ground floor and levels 1 to 8 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
  • Some sections of the stairs have handrails that are not easy to grip.
    A key card is required to access levels 1 and 8 using these stairs.
    There are similar stairs in Core C and Core D to the left of the building, and in Core A to the right of the building.
    A key card is required to access the Core A and Core D stairs.
    There is also a staircase between the ground floor and level 1 in the main building atrium for access to the lecture theatre and the Cinematic and Videogame Architecture Studio.
    There is a further set of stairs between level 2 and level 3 to the rear of the building for the Large Design Studio on level 3, and again between level 3 and level 4 to the centre of the building for access to the open Project Space and other areas on level 4.
    There is a final upward staircase for levels 4 to 6 at the front of the building, and onward to level 7 for the Wet Lab on level 7.
    Further to these are stairs to the rear of the building between the ground floor and level -1 for access to basement facilities including the bicycle store.

Changing Places (Ground Floor - Peninsular)

  • Location and Access View
    • The Changing Places facility surveyed is located on the ground floor, to the rear of the building.
    • The Changing Places toilet is in addition to other toilet facilities.
    • The distance from the main entrance is 55m.
    • The most accessible route to the Changing Places facility has step-free level access.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is tactile, pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
    • A RADAR key is required for access to this facility.
    • The door opens outwards and has a high visual contrast.
