Route Guide: Barnes Train Station to the Welcome Centre (Main Campus)

Introduction

  • This route leads from Barnes Station to the University Welcome Centre via Rocks Lane and Roehampton Lane. This route is approximately 1.3km long and should take 15 minutes to complete.
  • The main hazards on this route are uncontrolled road crossings and congested pavements. Although this is a step free route there is no direct step free access at Barnes Train Station.

Barnes Station Exit

  • There is level access from Barnes Station platform 1 to the car park area on the north side of the station.
  • There is no level access through Barnes Station to the bus stops or south side bridge exit.
  • The south exit is via the platform bridge on the platform 4 side.
  • The platform bridge has 15+ medium depth steps, clearly marked with handrails on both sides.

Barnes Station to Bewley Homes Car Park Access Road

  • Turn left on exiting the stairs and head straight.
  • There is a short steep ramp immediately after exiting the steps (shown in photograph 1).
  • Heading straight along the wooded path, for approximately 130m, there is a very easy gradient and a slightly uneven, tarmac surface.
  • The wooded path ends in a short, slight slope (shown in photograph 4) and runs along the side of Rocks Lane (A306).
  • The path here becomes even and level with a tarmac surface.
  • Approximately 15m after the slope a lamp post narrows the available path to 120cm in width, shown in photograph 7.
  • Continue straight ahead, after approximately 5m the path surface changes from even and level tarmac to even and level brick block paving.
  • After a further approximately 15m bear right to follow the pavement and cross the Bewley Homes Car Park access road.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs with no tactile paving on both sides (shown in photographs 9 and 10).

Bewely Homes Car Park Access Road to Upper Richmond Road Crossing

  • After the crossing continue straight along the side of the building.
  • The pavement here has an even and level brick block surface.
  • After approximately 10m turn right, around the corner of building, a lamppost on the left of this corner narrows the available path to 125cm (shown in photograph 2).
  • Immediately beyond the lamppost is an area of tactile paving for a traffic light controlled crossing on the left to cross Rocks Lane (shown in photograph 3).
  • Once around the corner, turn left to cross the A205 (Upper Richmond Road).
  • This is a traffic light controlled crossing, split into two halves.
  • The first half has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides with rotating cones, no audible warning and a control box 103cm high.
  • The second half is approximately 10m to the right of the first and has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides with a rotating cone, no audible warning and a control box 103cm high.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Upper Richmond Road Crossing to Roehampton Club Entrance Crossing

  • Turn left after crossing and then follow the pavement round to the right onto Roehampton Lane.
  • The pavement surface around the corner is brick block paving becoming concrete slab paving.
  • There is tactile paving on the apex of the corner for a Roehampton Lane crossing (shown in photograph 3).
  • Follow the pavement straight along Roehampton Lane.
  • The pavement has an even and level concrete slab and brick block surface.
  • After approximately 50m follow the pavement as it bears right around the Rossalyn Park RFC bus stop (shown in photographs 5 and 6).
  • There are multiple lampposts and sign posts along this section of pavement which narrow the available pavement to approximately 105cm.
  • After a further approximate 140m follow pavement round to the right towards the Roehampton Club entrance.
  • Cross the Roehampton Club entrance road via the zebra crossing in front of the club gates, shown in photographs 12, 13 and 14.
  • This crossing is level with no tactile paving.

Roehampton Club Entrance Crossing to Southlands College Entrance

  • Turn left after crossing to follow the pavement round to the right and follow Roehampton Lane.
  • The pavement narrows around the corner to approximately 130cm which then opens up as the pavement straightens out.
  • The pavement narrows due to lampposts and sign posts along this stretch, while not restricting a 150cm pavement width.
  • Cross Fairacres entrance road after approximately 170m.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs with no tactile paving.
  • This is a quiet road and is shown in photographs 6 and 7.
  • Continue straight ahead.
  • After approximately 100m cross the second Fairacres entrance road.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs with no tactile paving.
  • Continue straight along the pavement, the path here has a concrete block and brick block paving.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 9 and 10.
  • On the far side of the crossing there is a section of dropped kerb with tactile paving, shown in photograph 11, to cross Roehampton Lane.
  • After approximately 50m there are multiple obstructions on the left and right for around 10m (shown in photograph 12).
  • After approximately 150m pass the pedestrian entrance to Southlands College on the right, shown in photograph 13 and 14.
  • The pedestrian gate to Southlands College is 124cm wide and is permanently held open with tactile paving in the threshold.

Southlands College Entrance to the Welcome Centre (Elm Grove)

  • Continue straight past the Southlands College pedestrian entrance.
  • After approximately 15m pass behind the Roehampton University Main Entrance bus stop which leaves an available pavement width of 125cm on the right, this bus stop is shown in photograph 2.
  • Continue straight along Roehampton Lane with an even and level, brick block and concrete tile surface.
  • After approximately 60m follow the pavement around to the right into the main campus entrance.
  • There are multiple sections of tactile paving along the corner due to two traffic light controlled crossings to cross Roehampton Lane and the Roehampton University main entrance (shown in photographs 4 and 5).
  • The gate at the main entrance is 150cm wide, opens away from you and is permanently held open. This gate is shown in photograph 6.
  • Heading straight into the campus bear right to follow the path and cross the university car park access road.
  • This crossing is unmarked and level with no tactile.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 8, 9 and 10.
  • Turn left after crossing, There is a line of low level bollards (shown in photograph 10) which marks the edge of the pedestrian path and shared access road.
  • The University Welcome Centre is located approximately 25m ahead and on your right within the Elm Grove Building (shown in photographs 11 and 12).
