Getting To The Hospital (York Hospital)

  • By Road View
    • York Hospital is located North of York City Centre, off Wigginton Road.
      If you are coming from either the North or West of the city the access is best from the A1237.
      If coming from the South or East, then access is easier from the A64.
      There are multiple routes from these roads into the hospital and it is best to use the satnav postcode of YO31 8HE.
    • There is a multi-storey car park and a main Blue Badge only car park near the main hospital entrance.
      The multi-storey car park operates on a barrier/pay on exit system.
      Blue Badge parking is free of charge onsite and in the multi-storey car park.
  • By Bus View
    • The main bus company to stop at the hospital is First Bus.
      The services that stop on Wigginton Road outside the hospital are routes numbers 6, 40 and Hospital Bus.
    • There is an onsite bus stop.
    • The onsite bus stop is located opposite the main entrance, at the far side of the accessible car park.
    • The bus stop has bench seating and limited sheltering from the weather. There is no space for a wheelchair user under the canopy.
    • The route to the main hospital entrance is step-free level and approximately 80 metres. Along the route there are dropped kerbs, dropped kerbs with tactile paving and pedestrian crossings.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest train station is York, approximately 1.3 miles from the Hospital.
      The services which run to York Station are operated by Cross Country, Grand Central, LNER, Transpennine Express and Northern Rail.

Getting Help and Assistance (York Hospital)

Getting To (The Acute Medical Unit)

  • Enter through the main accessible entrance at the front of the hospital.
    Proceed towards the reception desk.
    Head around the right of reception to Junction 3.
    At Junction 3 turn left and proceed along the main corridor until reaching Junction 5.
    At Junction 5 turn right and proceed to the lift foyer.
    The visitor lifts AL1, AL2 and AL3 are on the left.
    Take the lift to the second floor.
    On exiting the lift turn left and go through the doorway marked Ward 22 and Ward 24.
    The Acute Medical Unit is on the left.
  • There is step free access, via lift, to the Acute Medical Unit.
  • The Acute Medical Unit is approximately 7m from the lift.
  • There are resting areas along the route.
  • Wayfinding signage is provided.
  • Dementia friendly signage is not provided.
  • There is some flooring in corridors which is shiny and could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • There is some flooring in corridors which includes patterns or colours which could be confusing or look like steps or holes to some people.

Entrance (Main Entrance - Automatic Doors)

  • This entrance is located at the front of the hospital building.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slope has a slight gradient.
  • There is an intercom at a height of 130cm.
  • The height of the hand sanitiser is 129cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • There is a push pad at a height of 83cm.

Lift (Junction 5 Lifts)

  • The lift surveyed is located halfway along the main hospital corridor, at junction 5.
  • The distance from the main entrance - automatic doors is 100m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and doors permanently held open.
  • The ground, first, second and third floor are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 129cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 155cm (width) x 267cm (depth).

    • The depth of the step(s) is/are not between the recommended 30cm and 45cm.

  • Female and male standard toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, to the left of the main hospital entrances, next to the outpatients waiting area, within Ellerby's Restaurant on the ground floor, on the third floor outside Ward 35 and outside the maternity entrance on the ground floor.
  • Parent and baby changing facilities are located on the ground floor, to the left of the main hospital entrances, next to the outpatients waiting area, within the Changing Place and also within Ellerby's Restaurant on the ground floor of the hospital.
