Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • Founder's South has three entrances.
    Two entrances provide step-free access via a steep ramp to the ground floor.
    One entrance provides stepped access to the ground floor.
  • The most accessible entrance is signed as 'Access to Herringham Room B'.
    The other ramped entrance is signed as 'Lower Herringham'. The stepped entrance is not signed.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building from the basement floor through to the third floor via a lift. The fourth floor is only accessed by the stairs.
  • The basement floor is accessed only by the lift.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are carpeted and smooth.
  • There are no resting/seating areas in circulation and lobby areas.
  • Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on the first and second floor, to the right as you exit the lift.
    • The shared step-free toilet facilities are located on the third floor, to the right as you exit the lift.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • Standard shower facilities are located on the third floor, to the right as you exit the lift.

Entrance (Accessible Entrance - 'Access to Herringham Room B')

  • This entrance is located in the archway into the south quad of Founder's Building.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a steep gradient.
  • The ramp is under 75cm wide with handrails on both sides.
  • There is a key pad at a height of 138cm.
  • There is a single manual door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 94cm.
  • The door has a high visual contrast.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located to the left as you enter the accessible entrance.
  • The distance from the accessible entrance is 2m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • The basement, ground, first, second and third floor are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • None of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 75cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 90cm (width) x 180cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • The majority of the internal controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • Internally the lift has: a mirror to aid reversing, a hearing assistance alarm system, a visual floor indicator and an audible announcer.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the right as you enter the accessible entrance.
  • The ground, first, second, third and fourth floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail extends horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.
