Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free level.
  • The approach to the main entrance is step-free level, albeit via a very slight slope.
  • The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy has three entrances, one of which (the main entrance) has a revolving door with alternative access via automatic doors.
    The main entrance provides step-free level access to Floor 0.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors, via lift, with the only exception being a slight ramp down into the Tea Room on floor 1.
  • On floor 1, there is a slight ramp, with handrails on both sides, to access the Tea Room.
  • There is a steep ramp, with handrails on both sides, to access floor 2 from floor 1 in the right of the building. This can be bypassed by using the lift (left of building).
  • There are 11 steps (with low colour contrast markings), to access floor 4 from floor 5 in the right of the building. These steps are 18cm high, have a tread depth between 30cm and 45cm, and have handrails on both sides which are easy to grip and extend horizontally beyond the first and last step. They can be bypassed by using the lift (left of building).
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes consist of vinyl, tiles and carpet, with all carpet being low-pile, and all vinyl and tiled flooring having a shiny finish.
  • There are resting areas in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building, especially in lift lobbies.
  • There are manual and automatic doors along circulation routes throughout the building.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

    • There are 9 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located to the left of the building on floors -1, 0, 2 and 4; and to the right of the building on floors -1, 0, 1, 3 and 5.
    • All toilets with adaptations have a left hand transfer space.
    • Ambulant toilet facilities are located within the standard male and female toilets to the right of the building on floors -1, 0, 1, 3 and 5.

Entrance (Main Entrance - Automatic Door)

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building, facing Charles Babbage Road.
  • The entrance area is not clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via a very easy slope at the entrance.
  • There is an intercom at a height of 118cm.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 100cm.
  • The automatic door is only opened for deliveries, or those who have issues with using the revolving door, so use of either of these entry systems is necessary.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 102cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 98cm.
  • The intercom or key fob/card reader both automatically operate the automatic door.
    The exit "button" is also a key fob/card reader, which automatically operates the automatic door.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Entrance (Main Entrance - Revolving Door)

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building, facing Charles Babbage Road.
  • The entrance area is not clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via a very easy slope at the entrance.
  • There is a single manual door at this entrance.
  • The door opens by revolving.
  • The width of the opening is 98cm.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.

  • Anyone who has difficulty with this revolving door can use the adjacent automatic door.

Entrance (Rear of Reception Foyer)

Reception (Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy)

Lift (Right of Building)

  • Owing to the large amount of natural light in the area, lighting levels may vary depending on the time of day and weather conditions.

    • This facility contains a wheel-in shower with adaptations. It has a flip-down shower seat at a height of 48cm, with dropdown rails on both sides, and a horizontal and vertical grab rail on the right as you face the seat. The shower has lever mixer controls, and has two shower heads - a fixed one at a height of 178cm, plus a height-adjustable one with a range of 132cm - 156cm, which is detachable. There is a lever to switch the flow of water between the two heads. A shower curtain is available.
