Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • The Pilkington Building has 2 entrances. The North Road entrance provides step-free level access to the ground floor, via a set of double manual doors, followed by a set of double automatic doors.
    The campus side entrance provides step-free access to the ground floor (via a steep ramp). There are two sets of double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The entrances are both signed as "Universities at Medway - Pilkington Building".
  • The North Road entrance gives step-free level access to the main ground floor foyer, via a set of double manual doors, followed by a set of double automatic doors.
  • The campus side entrance gives step-free access to the main ground floor foyer (via a steep ramp). There are two sets of double automatic doors at this entrance.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors, and to all floors, via lift.
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes consist of shiny tiles on the ground floor and low pile carpet on the first floor, with small areas of shiny vinyl flooring on the stairs.
  • There are resting areas in circulation and lobby areas throughout the ground floor, with a mixture of seating. There is no seating in any circulation areas on the first floor.
  • Wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building on all floors.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes and to access the lift lobby and stairwells on the first floor.
    There are no manual doors in any circulation areas on the ground floor.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 3 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on the ground floor, immediately to the right after the stairs as you enter the building through the North Road entrance; and on the first floor, to the south of the building, straight ahead and on the left as you exit the lift; and to the north of the building, straight ahead along the corridor and on the left before the north stairs as you exit the lift.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • Ambulant toilet facilities are located within all standard toilets.
    • The male step-free standard toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, immediately to the right as you enter the building through the North Road entrance; and on the first floor, immediately to the left as you exit the lift.
    • The female step-free standard toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, immediately to the right after the stairs as you enter the building through the North Road entrance; and on the first floor, to the south of the building, straight ahead and on the left as you exit the lift.
  • Changing Places and Changing Facilities View
    • Parent and baby changing facilities are located within the toilet with adaptations on the first floor, to the north of the building, straight ahead along the corridor and on the left before the north stairs as you exit the lift.

Parking

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located in front of the Jellicoe Building, off North Road.
    • The car park is open air/surface.
    • The car park surface consists of block paving.
    • There is 1 designated Blue Badge parking bay available.
    • The Blue Badge bay is clearly marked and signposted.
    • The surveyed Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 271cm (width) x 567cm (depth).
    • There is a marked zone to one side but not at the rear.
    • The width of the marked zone is 100cm.
    • The nearest designated bay is 85m from the North Road entrance.
    • The most accessible route from the Blue Badge parking has a steep ramp or slope, bollards and narrow walkways.
    • There is a dropped kerb with tactile paving from the designated Blue Badge parking.
    • The steep ramp described along the route is on the dropped kerb.
  • Charges and Restrictions View
    • This car park is for staff, students, visitors, Blue Badge holders, permit holders, staff permit holders and student permit holders only.
    • Parking is not free for all users.
    • Parking is free for Blue Badge holders.
    • Clearly presented parking signs are available.
    • Payment machines are located on the upper level of the campus - outside the security gatehouse; and in the Pembroke Building, opposite the Pembroke Café.
    • There is a payment machine with controls at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
    • There is a level manoeuvring space for a wheelchair user in front of the payment machine (minimum 185cm x 210cm).

    • There is a designated drop-off point available.
    • The designated drop-off point is located on the upper level of the campus, on Central Avenue, to the left of the Pembroke Building.
    • There is a dropped kerb without tactile paving from the drop-off point.

Entrance (North Road)

  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.

  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 152cm.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a second set of double automatic doors.
  • The second set of doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 128cm.

  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located at the far end of the building on the right as you enter through the North Road entrance, between the two sets of doors at the campus side entrance; or immediately to the left as you enter through the first set of doors at the campus side entrance.
  • The distance from the North Road entrance is 60m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and automatic doors.
  • The ground floor and first floor are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 630kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

Stairs (North Stairs)

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the north of the building, immediately to the right as you enter through the North Road Entrance.
  • There are double manual doors to access the stairwell.
  • The ground floor and first floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps have low visual contrast markings and have a handrail on the right going up.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.

      The door to enter the toilet area from the corridor is also automatic and push-pad activated. It opens away from you to a width of 80cm, with the touch-pads at heights of 77cm and 87cm on the outside and inside of the door respectively.

Toilet with Adaptations (First Floor - North Road Side - Right Hand Transfer)

    • The toilet surveyed is located to the north of the building, straight ahead along the corridor and on the left before the north stairs as you exit the lift.
    • The distance from the lift is 43m.
    • The most accessible route to the toilet has step-free level access, manual doors and automatic doors.

    • The door opens inwards automatically and has a high visual contrast.
