Route Overview

  • This route runs from the west end of Broad Street, at the west side of the pedestrianised city centre to the east end of Mealcheapen Street, at the east side of the pedestrianised city centre.
  • The pedestrianised section covered by this guide runs along Broad Street from the junction with Deansway to the junction with High Street and St Swithin's Street, and along Mealcheapen Street from the junction with St Swithin's Street and The Shambles to Cornmarket.

  • This route is part of the main shopping area of the city centre.
  • Broad Street and Mealcheapen Street are part of the main pedestrianised shopping area of the city centre.
  • The pedestrianised parts of this route are closed to vehicles between 10:30 – 16.30 daily.
  • Also pedestrianised but not forming part of this guide are High Street, The Shambles, Pump Street and Cathedral Square.
  • The lighting along the route is mostly modern bright white lighting on lamp posts.

Getting Here

  • Broad Street is located at the west end of the city centre.
  • Broad Street and Mealcheapen Street are pedestrianised streets with other streets crossing over them, some of which are also pedestrianised.
  • St Swithin's Street links Broad Street and Mealcheapen Street.
  • The city centre bus station is located at Crowngate Shopping Centre - Friary Walk.
  • The nearest railway station is Worcester Foregate Street.
  • There is a taxi rank on Angel Place, just north of the route.
  • There are additional taxi ranks along the route in St Swithin's Street.

Parking

  • BLUE BADGE PARKING (2*)
  • There are Blue Badge bays on The Cross.
  • They are not marked into separate bays.
  • There is room for 2 vehicles in the bay outside Lloyds Bank.
  • There is room for up to 4 vehicles in the bay outside of Skipton Building Society and NatWest Bank.
  • The bays are approximately 280cm wide.

  • There are 2 public car parks with Blue Badge bays:-
  • 1. Crowngate Car Park is on Moreton Place, off All Saints' Road and Deansway.
  • Parking is not free for Blue Badge holders.
  • 2. Cornmarket Car Park is off Queen Street.
  • Parking is free for Blue Badge holders for a maximum of 3 hours.

Section 1 - Broad Street

  • The length of this section is approximately 250m.
  • This section is pedestrianised from Deansway to The Cross.
  • The majority of this section is level.
  • There is a moderate slope at the Deansway end of this section, which becomes easy just beyond the entrance to Crowngate Shopping Centre - Friary Walk.
  • The surface of the ground is stone blockwork and red block paving and is uneven in places.
  • Cafes and restaurants in this section have outside seating out on the paved areas as part of a street cafe culture.
  • Between the paved and red block paved areas of this section are bollards at regular intervals.
  • The pedestrianised zone has trees, benches, directional signage and black refuse bins.
  • There are bicycle stands at the Deansway end of Broad Street.
  • Much of the street furniture is painted black with gold banding.

Crossing High Street

  • There are bollards between Broad Street and High Street.
  • There is not a designated crossing point.
  • There is level access across High Street.
  • High Street is pedestrianised with stone paving and tarmac.
  • High Street has one way traffic travelling from south to north (right to left).
  • Traffic may be busy during peak times.

Section 2 - St Swithin's Street

  • The length of this section is approximately 87m.
  • This section is not pedestrianised.
  • This section is level.
  • The surface of the paving is paving slabs and is uneven in places.
  • Between the pavement and road are bollards at regular intervals.
  • The street furniture is painted black with gold banding.

Crossing The Shambles

  • There is not a designated crossing point.
  • There is level access across the junction of The Shambles, St Swithin's Street and Mealcheapen Street.
  • The junction is block paved.
  • Directional signage is available after crossing this junction.
  • The Shambles has one way traffic travelling from north to south (left to right).
  • Traffic may also travel north to east from the junction onto Mealcheapen Street.
  • Traffic may be busy during peak times.

Section 3 - Mealcheapen Street

  • The length of this section is approximately 90m.
  • This section is pedestrianised.
  • This section is on an easy downhill gradient.
  • This section ends at Cornmarket.
  • The surface of the ground is paving stones and block paving.
  • Between the stone paving and block paved areas of this section are bollards at regular intervals.
  • Much of the street furniture is painted black with gold banding.
  • There is also a red public telephone box which also contains a cashpoint.

  • Accessible and standard public toilets can be found in Crowngate Shopping Centre - Friary Walk.
  • Accessible and standard public toilets can be found in Cornmarket Car Park.
  • Many cafes and shops also have toilets but they may not be accessible.
